Best Case for Ipad!!!!5
Wow!! I love this case. It has far surpassed my expectations.
Not only does it look and feel great, but the stand feature
is priceless!!! I used it on a 5 hour flight yesterday and it was perfect
setup on my tray table to watch my movies. When compared to the other choices out
there it is a no brainer. It is less than half the price of other similar
cases which don’t even have the stand feature. My ipad feels very snug and secure
in this case. It is definitely well protected. I just bought another black one to give to
my boss for his birthday and a red for me Deluxe Leather Apple Ipad Case with Built-in Stand (Red).
Couldn’t be happier. Trust me, just buy it and you will
never look back.

Great Case. Only one minor flaw.4
The case is leather with white stitching. It surrounds the face of the iPad leaving room for the display and home button. On the side there are open areas for all the buttons, speakers and mic.

The iPad is held in place by a fold over snap type button This button also appears on the closable front of the case. So to close the case you un-snap the button, close the case then re-snap the button to the outer section of the case.

On the back of the case is a picture frame type fold out stand which is complemented by a stabilizer visible on the front of the case. So when unfolded, the fold out stand slips into the grooves on the stabilizer. Its a great design.

It has one flaw. The fold out stand. It is on the outside of the case - even when the case is closed. It should have had a snap on it to prevent it from moving around. instead it had what appears to be a magnet that holds it in place. I guess this is not a bad compromise. I would have preferred a snap type button.

I am very happy with this case.

This high capacity renewable dehumidifier has been designed to adsorb moisture from small, enclosed areas. It will help protect clothes and valuables from the damaging effects of mold/mildew and moisture rot. It is 100% renewable and needs no power to operate. Just hang the Eva-dry unit in a closet, or you can place it in other small, enclosed spaces, and it will start to adsorb moisture. There are no batteries required or cords to plug in, the unit works without power. There is an indicator window with special “moisture meter crystals” that change from blue (when dry) to pink (when wet) to indicate when the unit needs to be “renewed”. The unit will adsorb approximately 8-10 ounces of moisture (depending on humidity levels this should take between 6 - 8 weeks). Once the moisture has been adsorbed it cannot leak or spill. This unit uses a specialized, engineered, crystallized silica gel that is odorless, non-toxic and completely safe. When the indicator crystals turn pink it is time to “re-new” the unit. Simply remove the unit from where it is adsorbing moisture and plug it into a power outlet or power strip in a well ventilated area (bathroom with extraction fan, garage, outside, etc.). There is a built-in heater that will warm the crystals allowing them to expand and release the moisture as water vapor into the outside air. It takes about 12-14 hours to completely re-new the unit. When it is completely renewed the indicator crystals will change back to blue. The unit is brand new again and ready to adsorb another 8-10 ounces of moisture. The crystals will remain active for 10 years and we offer a 5 year limited manufactures warranty on all EDV500 units.

Quite effective in small areas4
I was surprisingly pleased with the Eva Dry mini dehumidifier. I hang mine just out outside our guinea pig’s cage and it absorbs excess moisture quite effectively, keeping their food and cage area from getting too humid. It takes several weeks to fully absorb moisture but the indicator will go from blue to bright pink, and the unit will be noticeably heavier. Just plug the unit into the socket overnight to refresh.

Good product, need to iron out some glitches4
I prefer this product over refilling messy damp aid units anyday (yuck!).
It seems to keep the closet fairly dry. Two problems. Problem 1. When I renew one of the units, it falls out of the outlet unless I support it with something else. This could be dangerous since it heats up. I’m able to renew it on a counter outlet but could be a more problematic for a regular outlet that has more space between outlet and floor. Problem 2. My boyfriend who I forgot to tell about the unit, went into my closet like a bull in a china shop and it fell off its hook and broke (glass beads everywhere) - I had to buy a new one after only a month. There should be a more secure way to affix the unit to hang in the closet or perhaps customer should opt to put it on the floor. The hook is fairly flimsy and if you have kids or clutzy significant others, hanging just isn’t a good option for a closet that is full and tight.

EDV-500 big improvement over EDV-300 especially hanger4
I have 5 of these Eva-Dry rechargable dessicating dehumidifiers. Here in humid NC, using the larger in 4×8 closet works well. Takes some time, but definite measurable difference of 10-15% or so on humidity gauge after a couple of days. Need to recharge once a week here where even with the air conditioning on, indoor rel humidity is over 50% most days.

The larger EDV-500 has a much better hook which fits through the holes in the Eva-Dry EDV-500 plug, a feature that is not very well documented!

Also, there are occasional specials: recently a 2 for 1 sale on the EDV-500 with free shipping.

Only reason for not giving this product a 5 star is that as stated in other posts, the recharge process gets the unit very hot and it doesn’t always sit well in an outlet without support. I too had one unit fall, and was fortunate the case stayed intact but the little beads could make for a real mess if the unit broke open!

But the real mess this thing avoids is dealing with drying chemicals that collect water and the dissolved dessicant. When that tips over, it is a wet mess, so the EDV-500 and EDV-300 avoid that type of mess.

PS - where in the world did someone get the idea to label this “wireless” in the Amazon description? Very misleading!

Customer Reviews:

small size, big performance5
As they say, “a little bit of knowledge goes a long way…” If you live in or near a big city, this scanner will do absolutely no good because large metropolitan police forces use a trunk communication system due to the large number of units at work at one time. These systems aren’t actually scrambled, but due to high volume of calls, it would be hard of a single scanner unit to keep track of them so while you might be able to hear one end of the converstaion, you won’t necessarily be able to hear the other.

This unit is perfect for smaller cities which use frequencies betweem 153.0000 and 169.0000 for their police communications. The unit is also good for tracking airport traffic and, as you know by now, NASCAR events. The best thing to do when scanning for new frequencies is to have access to a code book for your area so you’ll know what you’re listening to at the time.

If you’re technologically-challenged in any way, you’re better off letting someone who knows what they’re doing program the basic channels for you. I like the fact that’s it’s a lot smaller and not as heavy as its predecesors. It’s a conspicuous as a mobile phone and a lot easier to carry on your belt without it getting in the way.

A real disappointment1
My #1 use for this scanner is for public safety scanning - I have family in law enforcement & we like to listen in.

I own a Uniden BC248CLT, & for years I owned a BC80XLT handheld. My BC80XLT was recently damaged & needed replaced. I ordered this BC72XLT, & am ready to return it also. It is not anywhere near the quality my prior Uniden handheld was. My 80 picked up as well or better than my 248 does here at home. This 72 picks up maybe 50% of the traffic of my others–whether in the house, outside, or even right in town. The buttons on this are awful, too. I have to go through multiple steps to do things that took only 1 button press on the 80. The reception, though, is my biggest concern AND complaint. I never had to purchase any extra antenna or such for my other Uniden handheld to get the better reception. Also, the volume, even at max output, is only “normal” listening level–so if I am in a noisy environment, I cannot turn it up to hear it better. My old BC80XLT had much better volume.

An additional warning - Uniden’s Support has gone down the toilet. I thought Uniden was a company that would at least *acknowledge* my complaint, and maybe even have some suggestions of a better product - all I got was an auto reply that I should hear from Customer Service in 2-3 business days–and then I never heard a thing. I checked my support question on their site, and it was marked “closed.” Good luck!

o.k scanner4
This is a good scanner if you do not mind having the 800 mhz unavailable. Easy to use. Good price. Long wait time if you need to return this item to Amazon. BC92XLT from J&R Electronics has the 800 mhz for $30 more.

Amazon.com Product Description
Versatile, compact, and easy to use, the Uniden BC72XLT handheld scanner offers a simple way to monitor the “action” bands, including police and fire channels (including rescue and paramedics), NOAA weather transmissions, business and industrial radio broadcasts, utilities, marine and amateur (ham radio) bands, air bands, and more. In short, the scanner keeps interested parties in the information loop. Of course, scanning the 32,000 available frequencies can be time-consuming and frustrating, which is why Uniden added such functions as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local signals, and a comprehensive memory that holds up to 100 programmed channels (10 per bank).

The scanner also offers six preset service banks, with preset frequencies for police, fire/emergency, aircraft, ham, marine, and weather, making it easy to locate specific types of calls. And should you want to regularly monitor a few specific channels, you can designate them as “priority” channels. The BC72XLT will then check those channels every two seconds while it scans each bank, so you never miss an important transmission. Other scanning functions include 10 programmable search ranges for finding unlisted frequencies in your area and a two-second scan delay that lets you hear any replies to the original transmission before moving on.

A scanner is fairly useless if you can’t decipher the transmission, which is why the BC72XLT is outfitted with triple-conversion circuitry. The technology virtually eliminates any interference from IF images and clarifies the selected frequency, so you needn’t strain to pick up certain words or phrases. And thanks to the key lock, you won’t accidentally change the programming while carrying the scanner in your pocket. Add in a memory backup that preserves stored frequencies even if the scanner loses power and an easy-to-read, backlit display and you’re ready for virtually any scanning situation.

The scanner comes with a flexible antenna with a BNC connector, ensuring adequate reception in strong signal areas (a separately sold external antenna will further improve reception), along with an AC adapter. As an alternative, you can power the scanner using two AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries (the latter can even be recharged while in the scanner). The unit measures 2.75 by 4.5 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

What’s in the Box
Scanner, AC adapter, flexible antenna, belt clip, frequency guide, user’s manual.

From the Manufacturer
The Uniden Bearcat BC72XLT handheld scanner is designed to monitor police and fire departments (including rescue and paramedics), NOAA weather transmissions, business and industrial radio, utilities, marine and amateur (ham radio) bands, air bands, and more. The versatile scanner is compact and easy to use, and includes such features as Close Call capture technology, which instantly tunes to signals from nearby transmitters to help you detect and identify local radio signals, and 10 programmable search ranges so you can find unlisted frequencies in your area. The scanner also offers six preprogrammed service searches–for public safety, railroad (by channel), air, marine (by channel), CB (by channel), GMRS/FRS (by channel), weather, news media, ham radio, and special.

Users will have no problem reading the scanner thanks to the backlit display, which illuminates only when there is channel activity. And users who want to focus their searches will appreciate the priority scan function, which frequently scans the channels they’ve designated as priorities. The scanner runs on two AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries (the rechargeable batteries can be recharged while in the scanner).

Refill Black Ink Cartridge4
I haven’t been using the Ink Cartridge long enough to see how long it lasts but my printing is looking fine. At this point, the only negative I have is that where the symbol appears on my ‘Printer’ (to show how full or empty the cartridge is so that I know when to change it)does not show with this ‘Refill’ Cartridge. I was surprised that would make a difference. My printer recognized it as a ‘Refill’ and said so on the screen when I inserted it. I’m concerned as to how to know when to change it because over-using can damage the printer. It doesn’t say it is a Hewlett Packard cartridge as the box shows on the ad..but seems to be compatible. I like the price but still wondering if it is wise to use a ‘Refill’ as opposed to a ‘new’ one. I hear pro’s and con’s.

Both cartridges defective1
Opened up the cartridges approx 4 months after purchase date, and 9 months before the “use before” date. First one: dead. Second: dead. Clearly, both are defective.

Quality product for my hp printer..wouldn’t use anything else.5
I have used generic ink before and have never been happy plus found it did damage to my other printer. I started using hp cartridges and have been very pleased plus the price through Amazon is outstanding!

The BEST wireless headset ever made5
I recently purchased this item and have used it for about a week so far. I’m very impressed with the range and this headset’s ability to shield itself from interference. There simply is no “buzzing” while downloading email to my BlackBerry while on the phone with this thing. I’m sure I’ll be upgrading my PBX telephone system soon to suit this headset better; I refuse to use the handset lifter, since that seems so old-school for a headset so technologically superior than any other wireless headset offering on the market. It’s important to note that a headset band, three different sizes of over-the-ear-loops and about four ear pads are included with this package.
The only bad thing about it, I can’t seem to get the sound amplified as I like it loud. I think it was too much loud music played from my iPod that blew out my hearing, so the sound level should be perfectly accommodating to other folks.
In short, you will not be disappointed by the Plantronics CS55.

Plantronics CS-555
I first purchased the Plantronics Bluetooth wireless headset, but had very poor luck with it. My office is loaded with electronics and evidently the bluetooth set couldn’t handle it-very poor reception. This headset, on the contrary, gives crystal clear reception inthe same environment. I use it for depositions and phone conferences which have to be clear. The headset is comfortable and has a much further range of useability than the bluetooth version. I am very pleased with this set.

“Very cool but poor sound quality” - NOT!5
After ordering the CS55 but before receiving it, I read the negative review “Very cool but poor sound quality” and was concerned about what I was going to receive. No worries! Reading the instructions would resolve most of the reviewer’s problem with the unit, moving the mouthpiece away from his/her face would take care of the rest!

Customer Reviews:

A Great Portable Hard Drive5
I got this portable hard drive recently to use for Time Machine with my MacBook Pro. Some notes and observations so far:

1) First off, the hard drive’s ruby red color is not as bright as the Amazon photo. It’s a darker red, which I prefer.

2) As with most portable hard drives, it is very quiet. Sitting a foot or two away from it, you should barely hear it, if at all.

3) This hard drive does not spin down after a certain amount of inactivity (unlike, for instance, a WD Passport, which spins down after 10 minutes or so of inactivity). You may or may not prefer this, depending on what you use it for. I use mine as a Time Machine, which backs up my hard drive every hour. I prefer the fact that it doesn’t keep spinning down and spinning back up every hour (many argue that this is worse for a hard drive than simply leaving it on all the time, but there are varying opinions on this).

4) I wouldn’t say the hard drive runs hot. It feels warm to the touch when idling all day like mine. However it may get hot if being used for constant data access. The only time it has felt somewhat hot is when I did the initial ~200GB backup of my hard drive.

5) This hard drive works well for daisy chaining. I have it connected to my MBP via Firewire 800, and I have a Firewire 400 external hard drive connected to the Iomega. NOTE: If you have the Iomega connected to your computer via USB, you cannot daisy chain a Firewire device.

6) Size-wise, it is a bit bigger than my (USB-only) WD Passport but it is still fairly compact.

7) The exterior feels like plastic, but the box says that the case is made from aluminum, so I’ll trust that it is.

8) The light on the back of the drive is VERY bright. It actually projects light onto my wall. The color of the light may vary. I bought two of these drives from two different Best Buys… One has a blue light, the other has a white light. Either way, I found the light to be pretty annoying, so I simply covered it up with a small piece of black electrical tape. Works well.

9) Comes with a USB cable, Firewire 400 cable, and Firewire 800 cable.

10) One review noted: “No on-off switch, drive does not stop when computer sleeps, does not stop when computer turned off!”. As far as bus-powered 2.5″ portable hard drives go, I have not seen any with an on-off switch, although some may exist. If you want that, you will probably want to go with a 3.5″ external desktop drive. HOWEVER, I think it is important to note that the Iomega WILL power down when the computer is sleeping or shut off. I was worried when I read this review because I thought the drive would keep spinning when I put my computer to sleep, but this is not the case. The only thing that stays on is the light. It will only turn off when you unplug the drive from the computer.

Overall, this drive works perfectly as a Time Machine. It is fast, small, quiet, not too hot, and unobtrusive. After the initial backup, you should barely notice successive backups (unless they are really big ones). The price is also great for a portable hard drive with three different connectivity options. The only thing I can’t review is hard drive longevity… Only time will tell. Here’s hoping that it lasts for a long time.

–UPDATE February 5, 2010–

Hard drive is still working extremely well for me as a Time Machine. A few new notes and observations:

1) A lot of people have been reporting that the top of their cases are detaching, which is pretty discouraging. I’ve been lucky, as the only problem I’ve had is that one of the front corners has come up about 1-2 millimeters. However, the top of the case is still in place and secure for the most part. I bought another one of these hard drives for my father, and the top of his case has not detached at all. I should note that I leave my hard drive on all day and sometimes overnight, whereas my father only turns his on every once in a while (when he turns his computer on), but it is generally turned off. I did buy my hard drives from Best Buy… Perhaps they received a shipment of units that were of better quality than what Amazon received?

2) This is a strange one… My hard drive runs SIGNIFICANTLY cooler than when I first got it. It hardly feels warm at all, even though it’s spinning away all day. I don’t really understand why, but I can’t complain.

3) My thanks to A.W. Jester for pointing out that you must register online to get the 3 year warranty. I had missed this at first!

This product seems pretty hit-or-miss based on the workmanship. On the one hand, I’d have a hard time recommending it based on the other reviews I’ve read. On the other hand, I would recommend it based on my own experience. It’s a great value for the price if you’re lucky enough to get a good one.

Must register for the 3 year warranty!4

Red Hot Top Casing Detachment1
Upon initial usage, transferring 250GB worth of data in about 4 different transfers, I found the hard drive edges to be temperature hot. I floated the hard drive to add air circulation at the bottom. Not even an hour has passed since initial usage, the top casing separated slowly from the body. I could see the glue stretching. I push it down gently to stick it back, but within seconds, it rose up again.

Immediately I contacted Amazon for an exact replacement. Today the second Iomega Ego came, and I repeated the same procedure, but this time floating the drive to avoid overheating. It did not help: Although the top casing did not separate as badly as the first one, it did pop up. With the first product, I thought it was just quality control issue, and it was a fluke; but now that the problem is repeated with this second product, I do not think it is a coincidence.

Iomega is an early supporter of Mac and Apple, and I like supporting Apple partners; but unless they design this better, I would not get this particular product. I travel a lot and in need of a sturdy portable hard drive. Wrapping this beautiful Ruby Red drive with a duct tape beats the original aesthetic intention of the designer.

Customer Reviews:

Richard, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer - Microsoft Certified Trainer5
I want to start by qualifying my comments - I’m a 16-year IT professional. I’m an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) certified from Windows NT 3.51 up to present (Windows 2003). I am also an MCT (Microsoft Certified Trainer) had have taught Microsoft technologies for over 12 years.

The first thing to understand about the product line from Hawking Technologies is this: these are not Fischer Price toys. When you get into the arena of boosting signals of your wifi network…or extending…or repeating the wireless signals of your wifi network….you are dealing with intermediate to advanced technology implementation.

I am reading through the reviews on this product and there seems to be this recurring “expectation” by various people….that they are buying a fool-proof product that will install itself. Well…..that’s not the case and these people bring on their own frustrations.

Hawking Technologies offers this signal booster product so that you can add it to your existing WIFI router. As such there is ALWAYS a chance of compatibility issues. There is no “magic way” to make a third-party product compatible with every vendor’s router. That’s just not realistic.

Still, I have recommended and installed this particular booster product for at least three dozen SMB clients (small-to-medium-sized businesses) throughout NJ and NY. I have had fantastic results with each application and have not seen a SINGLE INSTANCE where the product failed after a short time period (something I’ve read from some reviewers).

I have been recommending, installing and supporting this product for approximately four years now (beginning with the company’s first version and now their revised implementation; which is almost identical).

Furthermore, my experience with Hawking technical support has been very good; compared to that of much larger companies (such as Dell….whom I believe have the worst technical support of any large technology vendor).

Perhaps Hawking has “outsourced” their customer service to a third-world sweat shop in India just as every other medium or large IT vendor has in the US. Don’t get mad at the vendor for that, people…..get mad at your politicians and our country’s legislation; which makes it profitable and financially practical for this scenario. Yes, I absolutely HATE IT when I have to deal with broken-English, non-professional and disgracefully underqualified customer support people in sweat shops. These people are earning ten cents an hour with no bathroom breaks….so what can we expect?

And with regard to the inaccurate owner’s manual….well…..that is valid but NOT MAJOR!! Yes, Hawking needs to revise their installation manuals such that they are accurate and easily digestible. It’s silly that they haven’t remediated that problem yet; considering that the paperwork is for a best-of-class product. Still……this is ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY and people can’t rely on a manual in order to make this product work for them. You may need an SMA to TNC adapter; depending on your application. Any local Radio Shack should have in stock what is needed to make it plug in. I suggest packing up both the router and the booster and bring it right to your nearest Radio Shack. Have the counter guys and gals gather up for you the couplings and cables that you need for connectivity.

What matters most of all is that this product is the best booster available for the price range and for the class of application (home usage). I have installed MANY of these into mission-critical business environments and have enjoyed outstanding results EVERY TIME…..WITHOUT EXCEPTION.

Additionally….someone mentioned a health risk associated with using this product at the maximum setting. RUBBISH!!! IN A PIG’S EYE!!! People really make me laugh. As one of my mentors once said…..”The Internet is a cesspool of misinformation so beware”. True indeed!

I have installed industrial, omnidirectional WIFI towers that emit a hundred thousand times the radiation as this product. These towers are only dangerous when a human stands right in front of them. From five feet away….there is no health risk. Thus, the notion that this small device is a health risk is complete made-up nonsense. Go ahead and put the device in the cage with your gerbil and it will live a long, healthy life.

Lastly….the noise that this device creates is so insignifigant….I can’t believe how many people are complaining about it. You can only hear it when you’re right on top of the unit so it will only be an issue if you intend on strapping the booster to the side of your head. If not (hopefully NOT!!!) there is no concerns about the noise. Put it in the corner next to your WIFI router and it won’t bother anyone…I PROMISE!!

I do not give up five-star recommendations easily but Hawking Technologies is one of those companies that excels infinitely at their specialized market nitche. This signal booster is the “only show in town” and I whole-heartedly recommend it above all others. When you receive it and open the box, you will be immediately impressed by the obvious workmanship and engineering that went into it.

Not only will it improve signal strength throughout your home or office but it will improve your wifi throughput SUBSTANTIALLY in every way.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you use a signal booster, you increase your SECURITY RISK enormously. Your neighbors may pick up on your boosted signal even stronger than their own indoor wifi router signal. You will have effectively offered your WIFI network to an extended and unwelcomed audience. Accordingly…..be SURE to revamp your wifi router’s security. Use WPA instead of WEP if all your machines are compatible (WEP is, for all intents and purposes….fairly hackable). Use STRONG passwords for wifi access to your network. Be sure that your firewall is properly setup. Exercise as much security as is possible without compromising your network’s functionality.

And stop thinking about it and buy this product. You’ll be GLAD that you did (believe it).

PS: This is a purely objective review of Hawking Technologies’ signal booster product. I’m not affiliated with the company. I simply call ‘em as I see ‘em.

It really works - Perfect for FiosTV4
Ok, my network was perfect and then FiosTV came along. The mandatory Actiontec Router, would not play well with my Linksys range booster. So, I figured I would give this a try. It works! My signal went from 1 to 2 bars to 3 to 4 bars.

Only 4 stars, because for some reason the instructions don’t mention hooking this up to a router. But another Amazon reviewer did it and I also saw a review on CNET where it says that this product is designed to be hooked up to your router. So why don’t the instructions say that? Anyway hook it up to your router, especially if it’s the FiosTV Actiontec router.

Instant Gratification…a simple solution for any router with a removable antenna5
For me, this is truly a plug and play device that delivers the goods…set up was done in literally two minutes. I simply needed more signal strength, as some my machines suffered from a marginal signal. Now, all of them receive an excellent signal. For signal strength needs, I really think this device is something that should tried first before going to the alternative–wireless range expanders/extenders.

Wireless range expanders, which require configuration with routers, can work very well once set up correctly. But many people I consider tech-savvy (including myself) have pulled their hair out making them work.

Bottom line, this did the trick for the Actiontec router that came with my FIOS service. At $90, it is pricey, but the time savings is well worth it. And think of the additional time saved if you ever change your router or network!

Some people here mentioned problems with this booster, but I still think that this is the first method to try…worse case scenario, you can always return it :)

From the Manufacturer

Cons:None for the price.

Good Product with Great Factory Service5
I purchased this DVD player for my living room a few weeks ago. I noticed a rattle noise from the remote control before I was able to install the batteries. Sure enough, the remote did not work. I contacted Magnavox and found that they have the best customer service I have encountered in a very long time. Everyone was helpful and quick to correct my concern. Within a week, I had my new remote (free of charge) and was able to watch movies. The DVD player itself works wonderfully and has a very sharp picture using either the RCA inputs or HDMI input (cable not included but available on Amazon for less than five dollars) and the upconversion. For the price I cannot imagine a better player.

Great, but upconversion is horrible3
I like everything about this DVD player but the upcoversion. I agree with the other reviewers on all the other “pros”. I have a Blu-Ray player and a High def TV. Obviously, any upconverted DVD will never compare to a Blu-Ray movie, but the upconversion on this DVD player looks a thousand times worse than the upconversion on my friend’s Playstation 3. If it looked as good as the PS3, I would be thrilled. There is little to no difference in the resolution between the settings 480P, 720P, or 1080P. All in all, this player isn’t bad, especially for the price. It’s ridiculously inexpensive, but if you’re looking for something exclusively for the upconversion feature, as I was, I recommend spending a bit more for one that will really upconvert. If I had bought it in a store, I would have returned it. But for the price, it wasn’t worth the hassel sending it back to Amazon.

Customer Reviews:

High quality - scans and hardware5
I also bought this to scan slides — however, while the slides are the standard slide size in terms of the holder, the slide film itself is square instead of rectangular like most modern slides (mine are about 1.44″ x 1.44″). For some reason, the default size of the cropping the 8800F uses when you select 35mm slides is not user-changeable. I wrote the company and got a standard answer back that basically said “we’re not changing the software to make you happy”. I think they misunderstood me, but whatever…

Fortunately, I found the answer quite by accident. It turns out that in order to make the scanner work for my situation (and maybe yours), I simply had to uncheck the “Switches On/Off the Thumbnails View Mode” button and that allowed me to manually create the right size crops. It also means I can use the 35mm strip holder instead of the 35mm slide holder and leave the old slides in their metal slide magazine holders, saving me even more time.

After figuring that out, I’m happy to say this scanner exceeds my expectations and makes me a happy camper now that I can no longer use my Konica Dimage Scan Dual IV with my Vista-based PC. The hardware is very sturdy and speed is great. 1200 DPI scans take less than a minute each.

If you want more information on how to manually set-up to scan older slides, leave me your email as a comment to this review.

Hope that helps.
Steve

EXTRAORDINARY!5
OUT OF THE BOX: The complete machine is much smaller and lighter than my previous scanner, with the same scan field dimensions. It comes with a USB connection and a separate power “brick” between wall socket and scanner. Three scan guides are included; a combo of 2 side-by-side 35 mm film strips (for 5 frames each) with latches that flatten curved strips, a guide for 4 standard size slides and a 120mm film strip holder. These guides fit into a specific place on the scan surface, so that they line up under the lid-mounted light source, which is covered by a removable shield. The lid is quite light, but it needs opening to almost straight up for it stay open without support. The thin latches on the 35mm film strip guide are very flimsy, and I already snapped one when trying to load curved negative strips. Software with scanner drivers etc., an advanced image editing program, as well as versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements (5.0 for windows, 4.0 for mac) are included.

SOFTWARE: I haven’t tried all the included software yet, as I prefer to work in other programs for archiving and retouching images. Having said that, using one of the programs to drive the scanner (MP Navigator) I think that there are some unnecessary steps and windows between scanning and saving. Working from a mac, setup was easy and scanning using the scanner interface is very intuitive. Everything runs relatively smooth, but there are occasional software crashes, and I cannot queue a lot of images before the program’s buffer is full (even with an excess of RAM). Automatic detection of the images within slide frames or negative strips is very accurate, but this can be switched off, as another reviewer noted, and you can select your own area of interest or a whole film-strip.

SETTINGS: There are numerous choices to make before you scan, such as Unsharp Mask and Remove Dirt & Scratches, which has different levels to choose from, as do “Grain Correction” and “Backlight Correction”. While I generally see a beneficial effect of the Unsharp Mask (again; I work at high dpi settings), I notice that turning the dirt and scratch removal on only makes a mess of the affected areas, while leaving some specs or smudges completely untouched. I tend to turn the choices for removal of dirt & scratches and grain correction completely off. I am running the scanner completely from the scanner software and am not using the panel of buttons on the scanner lid, but it appears that these can be user-configured. Hidden in the preferences is also a setting to enable 48/16 bit output, but I haven’t played with that yet.

RESOLUTION: As noted by other reviewers, at higher resolution settings scanning can take quite some time, but I actually like this when it gets to a point of 30 minutes (for example for 8 negatives at 3200 dpi), so that I can work on something else instead of tending to the scanner every few minutes. For a preview scan and scanning prints at lower dpi settings this scanner is reasonably fast.

FILE FORMAT & COMPRESSION: When I was running my initial tests to figure out optimal settings (optimal between image resolution needed and memory demand desired) I ran into some unexpected findings. For instance, I see a dramatic improvement in retention of details when I save scanned images as JPEG format rather than in full size TIFF. The compression actually seems to greatly improve contrast and sharpness, while taking up a lot less space! There are 3 levels of JPEG quality; High, Standard and Low (with inverse amounts of compression), but so far I have not noticed any (!) difference in final details when I choose “standard” over “high” quality, and again; the files take up less space in standard setting. A clear difference may be seen at lower dpi settings.

RESULTS: The proof of any scanner is in the final scanned image and judging by that standard this CanoScan performs really well. Scanned prints are easy, because their physical dimensions don’t require a high dpi setting. For color or negative film, some colors come out perfect, while others need a little tweaking afterwards, but overall this scanner performs great. I have posted a few images of color slides scanned with the CanoScan 8800F where I compare certain scan or save settings.

IN SHORT:
Pros: High quality scanner with lots of professional options for a low price. Abundant choices in resolution and other settings. Produces amazingly detailed images from prints, negatives and slides.
Cons: Mostly related to software (only tested on a mac); small buffer for scanned images, occasional software crashes, some needles clutter in amount of windows and pop-ups (some, but not all can be turned off). Flimsy latches for 35mm filmstrip guide.

In spite of some software shortcomings the end results are fantastic for a scanner at this price, and I rate this scanner around four-and-a-half stars.

This is a review of the Canon CanoScan 8800F.

Grandpa loves his new scanner!5
After enjoying my now old Epson Perfection 1650, I was assigned the family’s task of scanning our old family slides. I first tried the dedicated slide scanner available at Hammacher Schlemmer. What a piece of c***! After researching dedicated slide scanners for a while, I came upon a review of the Canon 8800F. After further research (I think I reached the end of the Internet during this effort) I ordered one. Now, after having scanned about 500 old slides, and getting used to the new software interface, I’m in love with this scanner. It does a GREAT job scanning the old slides in super-high resolution (4800 dpi) and is also an excellent general purpose scanner. Just a footnote, it takes about 20 minutes to scan four slides at 4800 dpi.

Customer Reviews:

Excellent shredder!!!4
Just received this beast from Amazon today & couldn’t wait to try it as my old one (Royal Orca) finally died after several years of faithful service & credit card checks were starting to pile up. My old Shredder was a table top model that would only shred a couple of checks at a time & I wanted something more “formidable” Well this critter fits the bill. Its intake is a full 9″ so I can unfold a sheet of checks & make fast work of them. Its 7 gal basket means less trips to the garbage. Plenty of indicator lights to give it that “Gee-Whiz” look, & one feature that makes this shredder a must have for families with little children…..a safety lockout that cuts power to the shredder if little fingers are touching the intake area. A size gauge on the front is small but very handy feature so you don’t overload the machine. Another handy feature is the pull out basket, makes emptying this thing a breeze. Any complaints? So far just one……the basket assembly seems flimsy, especially on carpet it seems somewhat “wobbly”. Take the basket out & it seems it might collapse. The pluses far outweigh the cons so I highly recommend this item.

Pluses:
1. Shredding capabilities are all any home could need
2. A great shredder for a good price
3. safety lockout
4. Shreds credit cards & Cd’s
5. Looks great.
6. Indicator lights to tell whats happening

minuses
1. Flimsy basket assembly

Update 7/20/07:
auto shutoff quit working. Major hassle to turn it on & off manually. after a couple of weeks this I e-mailed customer service @ Fellowes & explained the problem. I received an e-mail from a nice CS lady the next asking for clarification of the problem(bad sensor) she e-mailed back the next day that Fellowes was sending a new unit(at their expense) & to return the bad one in the same carton with a downloadable label(also at no expense to me). When I returned home the following week there was my new shredder on the porch. Scheduled a PU for Fed-Ex the next business day. All in all a positive experience. I wish more companies were like Fellowes.
BTW the flimsy baqsket is still going strong :o)

Runs more quiet, is slower, and makes larger pieces than my PS-804
My seven year old Fellows Power Shred PS-80 cross cut shredder finally stopped working after I gave it too much paper (broke a gear). So I replaced it with this PS-77Cs. I noticed that this PS-77Cs shreds more quietly than my previous PS-80. Both will shred credit cards. But my old PS-80 won’t shred CDs or DVD’s: I noticed that there are two small points (like canine teeth) on each of the PS-77Cs’ cutter blades that probably help grab and help pull the plastic cards and CDs in its shredding action.

What I don’t like about the PS-77Cs shredder is that it shreds slower than my old PS-80 (probably because of the more powerful motor for shredding 12 sheets versus 5 sheets with my old PS-80). Usually, more torque = slower speed. So I’ve developed some patience as a result. What’s a real disappointment is that the output cross cut pieces from the PS-77Cs are twice the length of my old PS-80 (1 ½”inch for the PS-77Cs versus 3/4″inch for the PS-80).

Something not mentioned in the included instructions: you can carefully flip up the SafeSense /credit card / CD slot up to more easily add the Fellows Cross Cut shredder oil. I think it gives me better control so I don’t get the oil onto the safety eyes used to sense when paper is actually in the shredder slot.

UPDATE: March 13, 2010.
Yes, I still have this shredder and it still is working after all these years. It has not slowed down (although the amount of junk mail is less).

I have managed to feed it too much paper all at once but I was always able to clear the jam and more importantly, I didn’t strip any gears. I’ve shred paper, credit cards, CDs, and it takes it all.

It’s nice to see that this good shredder is still made.

shreds well..but won’t stop2
After just a few weeks of use, this unit just won’t stop, I’ve used compressed air to clean, remove every bits of paper I can see inside, still it just won’t shut down. Funny thing is that although a different model, we had the same problem at work with this brand, I wonder if they have a bad design on the sensor.

Update: I called the customer support line, and I was very impressed, I got a person on the line. They offered to replace the shredder and they offered a label for free shipping of the defective one. Once I get it I’ll update. Very surprisingly, I was told that I can’t leave the unit on “I” all the time (where it start if it detects paper). I was told to leave it on off at all time, and only turn it on when I was feeding it paper. The tech support even told me that they recommend leaving the unit unplugged as much as possible. I found that a bit strange, why have a sensor if you have to turn it on manually anyway.
