Though based on the well-known character in Phil Silver’s noted oldie TV demonstrate, the fresh “Sergeant Bilko” is less an homage to that present than it is to the classic Steve Martin of his 1970’s days. Though this Bilko (again a shifty and tireless grafter, the irascible face of non-coms everywhere) is very remarkable the opportunist that Silvers’ character was (he runs the noxious casino), as horrified of risk as Silvers was (the unit’s mobilization orders for Desert Storm mysteriously disappeared) and manages to obtain caught in his maintain dealings as Silvers had (Bilko botches the fixing of an Army boxing match, unwittingly tricking each boxer to consider he’s the one who’s supposed to assume a plunge) the screwball zaniness is very great out of Steve Martin’s SNL days.

The script has Bilko’s unit charged with testing a label recent army weapon - a “hovertank” that is soon to be cancelled because, among other things, it simply doesn’t work. That the hovertank’s destroy will spell doom for his believe cozy set doesn’t seem to bother Bilko, mostly because he lives day-to-day. Things change when the officer charged with evaluating the hovertank turns out to be the fearsome Major Thorn (Phil Hartman) . Years earlier, Bilko unwittingly made an enemy of Thorn by accidentally implicating him in one of his bitched schemes. Now a major, Thorne isn’t simply allege enough to eliminate the Hovertank, but must now axe Bilko as well. They say that desperate times insist the man, and Bilko is now revealed to be the spineless weasel his troops have approach to savor. Martin plays Bilko like a character from one of his ragged SNL skits. It’s sort of fun to sight the guy work on material we haven’t seen since his more sedate days playing less zany funnymen (”LA Sage”, “Roxanne”) and more former dramatic roles (”The Spanish Prisoner”, “Stout Canyon” and that update of “Silas Marner”) . It’s light and breezy and you’ll probably forget most of the gags, and the script under-uses most of the supporting cast (especially the now late-great Phil Hartman as Bilko’s unpleasant nemesis), but it’s serene fun.

How we miss the good-old-films of Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd, and surely they do too. “Sgt. Bilko” fits only for the matinées on TV afternoon schedules. It is too naive, completely predictable and elephantine of clichés. Steve Martin’s humour here is only a pack of unsightly faces. Another Steve would fit the level of this film: Steve GUTTENBERG.

In order to understand this horrid and mighty documentary, you have to understand the meaning of two terms:

(1) Democracy: government in which the current people believe the ruling power either directly or more usually, through elected (by a majority) representatives; the principle of equality of rights, opportunity, and treatment.

(2) World Trade Organization (WTO) : from the film itself, it “is the latest in a series of transnational bodies and agreements to regulate the global economy. It can spend sanctions and fines to override the labor, safety, and environmental standards of individual nations.”

What is this film about? In Nov. 1999, the WTO was scheduled to occupy its last meeting of the millennium at the convention center (unhurried closed doors) in downtown Seattle, Washington. Activists (from all over the world) prepared to blockade the streets to prevent the meeting from taking set since they gaze the actions of the WTO to be unfair favoring corporate greed over the working guy/gal. Over thirty thousand protesters converged on downtown Seattle.

The viewer is told that “by the demolish of the week, demonstrations were being held around the world in solidarity with the protests in Seattle.”

The viewer is presented with considerable images of the enlighten “that was shot by over one hundred media activists.” Also there is printed information that appears (for example, the definition of WTO above) and footage of protesters and assert leaders saying what’s on their mind. Parts of this documentary are narrated. (Susan Sarandon is one of the narrators.)

Besides learning a lot, I felt I was actually at the pronounce. Thank goodness I was not physically there since the police force monitoring this event started getting brutal with the protesters. (Many were arrested and beaten by police.)

The only scrape I had is that for the printed material that appeared, abbreviations that I was weird with were musty for the names of various labor and other organizations. It would have been superb and more instructive to me if the chubby names were broken-down instead.

Finally the DVD (the one released in 2005) is perfect in represent and sound quality. However, I did leer that after the film finishes, the program does not revert encourage to the main menu. There are several spirited extras including video excerpts from the WTO 2003 protests in Cancun, Mexico.

In conclusion, this is a remarkable film showing proper footage of how a relatively diminutive group of protesters tried to remove befriend the rightful democratic power that the political and corporate elite of the world is distinct to capture from the exiguous people.

(2000; 70 min; rotund shroud)

+++++

This was a titanic film on the events that led to the protests at the WTO. I opinion it did a broad job of demonstrating the fragile nature of our presumed moral to free speech and freedom of assembly. Colossal for classroom employ!!!

At the demolish of the Eighties the action movie genre, which had flourished throughout the decade, began to stagnate. Cinema goers had seen enough explosions and gunfights cloned from the same formula made accepted by Arnie and Sly. Both of these men were appealing in the direction of comedy and action movies needed something original.. something novel. In stepped John McTiernan and Bruce Willis with DIE HARD. Willis, most noted at the time for the humorous T.V. Series ‘Moonlighting’, made a perfect ordinary-man-in-an-extraordinary-situation action hero. He was believeable as John McClane and not immune to being wound. He blead and felt wound, a first for the genre. And yet his frosty confident delivery of a sizable wisecracking, shiny script made him all the cooler. But most credit should go to Director John McTiernan, king of the sophisticated action flick. He made action movies slick, knowing and chubby of rush and wit while never letting up on the bullets, cars and bombs front. Special praise must go out to Alan Rickman too whose performance as chief baddie Hans is to this day one of cinemas finest, inviting convincingly from wintry, collected and unexcited to desperate and nervous, never once seeming anything less than utterly ruthless and calculating. Die Hard is a large movie for a number of reasons but adding three dimensions to the action genre is this films finest achievement and anyone who has not sampled its delights before now would be wise to obtain a copy as soon as possible. But don’t peer it on T.V. oh no, because it is never without necessary and completely unnecessary extra editing for violence and language. Indulge In it on video or DVD if you can, recognize it in all its current splendor, it is arguably the greatest action film ever made. And then go ogle the sequels.. they rock too!

When I bought the “Die Hard Ultimate Collection” spot, I really didn’t consider they would be able to do noteworthy with the very first Die Hard. It’s a handsome traditional movie. I really didn’t know if they could do great to improve the recount and sound quality of the movie. Well, I view nefarious, for when I watched this movie, I was completely haunted and unnerved. I said to myself, “I can’t beget they made this movie better.”

This has to be one of the best transfers I have ever seen. The describe is ten times more crisper and sharper than the older DVD version. When the terrorists shoot out the glass windows to trap Willis, you can literally watch every single share of glass landing on the floor. Also, the sound is explosive and very impressive, especially if you can ogle it in DTS. When I watched this unique version of “Die Hard”, it was like seeing it for the very first time.

If you are not familiar with “Die Hard”, here’s the story: Bruce Willis is John McClane, a very short tempered Fresh York cop. He goes to California, hoping to patch things up with his wife, who works at the Nakatomi Plaza. All of that changes when a group of terrorists, armed to the teeth with guns and explosives, resolve to prefer over the building. Now, the only one who can end them is McClane, and possess, he’s not too thrilled with the conception, but he knows he’s the only one who stands a chance against them. McClane goes on a one-man war, running around the plaza, taking out the terrible guys, and trying his best to quit alive. As soon as he hears the first gun shot, McClane knows he’s about to have a very terrible day.

This is a must have for anyone who loves “Die Hard”. I know some might be hesitant since they already have the first box plot, but absorb me, it is worth it. Filled with non-stop action and thrills, “Die Hard” is a classic, and should be seen by all who loves action films. Again, I must say this is one of the best transfers I have ever seen. This film is absolutely mesmerizing. Michael Douglas snaps one day and goes wandering through Los Angeles. I deem it’s curious when you read reviews on this movie from people in the midwest who don’t collect this movie. People in L.A. on the other hand certainly do procure it. I can thunder you from personal experience of living there and being held at gun point by scumbags that anyone could be pushed over the edge in LA. I found this movie to be laugh-out-loud droll especially when Michael Douglas orders a “Whammy Burger” and when he tries out his rocket launcher after an argument with a Cal-Trans employee. “There’s nothing rank with the road, but I’ll give you something to fix.” I don’t deem people outside of LA can like that scene as great. And watching Michael Douglas on that golf course had my side hurting for days from painful laughter. Yes, it’s sick but the draw he looks down at the veteran guy and says, “And now you’re going to die…with that droll hat on”, was astounding. And how about the scene with the white supremist? If you mediate this movie had too many stereotypes, then you’ve never been to LA. It’s a sick status with sick people where sick things happen. Yes, it’s poor that people net shot, but a lot of people in LA deserve what happens to them which this film boldy proves. Studies have shown that the combination of stress, traffic jams, and smog can create someone lose it. What’s the point? The point is you should like wherever you live as long as it’s not there. Michael Douglas should have got an Oscar for his performance. This was the best movie of the year although it’s obviously not for all tastes.

This is a mighty film, but I personally don’t gaze at it as some type of social commentary or condemnation of recent society, although it certainly touches on some of the problems that will always exist among human beings. Falling Down may well have a potent execute on anyone watching it, though. It always leaves me feeling really, really irregular because it touches on so many things we all have to keep up with each day, presents a monster whom I can’t benefit but sympathize with in some degree, provides us with a hero whose fill life is rife with undeserved problems, and runs its course atop a strong undercurrent of sadness. Michael Douglas gives one of his better performances as Bill Foster, an unremarkable man who finds his world torn apart and finally impartial snaps. He has lost his wife and puny girl (which is his fill fault) ; he’s lost his job, the one thing that made him feel important; he unprejudiced wants things to be like they customary to be. He doesn’t want to sit in traffic with no air conditioning or pay almost a dollar for a petite can of soda or peek plastic surgeons living the life of Riley while he can’t even attend his puny girl. His slip “home” is an astonishing one, and the kinds of poor people he encounters on the intention do nothing to relieve his mentality. It’s hard not to cheer him on when he manages to enact an run from a couple of gangsters trying to bewitch him, but acts such as holding a burger joint up unprejudiced because they refuse to abet him breakfast after lunch time is, obviously, contrivance out there. No matter what unpleasant things he does, though, I can’t acquire completely past the fact that he earnestly wants to discover his limited girl and give her a point to for her birthday; in a clearly psychotic plan, I net this movie somewhat touching, and that only makes the whole experience more depressing than it already is.

Robert Duvall is indeed quite righteous as the capable cop, Prendergast, pursuing this vigilante on his last day before retirement. His life is no dream either, but of course he handles his absorb problems in a plot quite unlike our man Foster does. His wife is clearly stunned, made frighteningly burdensome and vulnerable by the death of their enjoy miniature girl and an earlier wounding of her husband on the job. For her encourage, he took a desk job and is forced to set up with a lot of jokes and insults from his fellow cops, including his believe boss. Except for his partner, all of the cops in this film are as unfeeling and cruel as some of the shady characters Foster meets up with during his mosey home, and that is to me one of the more disturbing aspects of this film.

One of the things I liked most about Falling Down was its attempt to characterize Foster as one very fearful man and not a stand-in for any type of stereotypical vigilante; one character in particular makes this point quite clearly when, discovering that Foster doesn’t actually agree with him in his contain curved, stereotypically extremist mindset, he asks the man fair what kind of vigilante he is supposed to be. My contain thinking is that Falling Down is not meant to be a warning about a group of potential Bill Fosters festering in the midst of society; instead, by showing us what happens to one man, it is warning us to stir carefully on our maintain journeys and to be careful to withhold our tempers in check even when the world seems to be out to accumulate us. At the same time, it doesn’t imply that we should roll over and play plain whenever a quandary comes our contrivance, using the character of Prendergast to expose us that we can and should stand up for ourselves but only in constructive ways. I really have a lot of conflicting emotions about this film, but the one thing I am clear of is that Falling Down is an unforgettable motion characterize well worth seeing.

I unbiased watched the DVD today, and I have to say it’s Suited! The relate quality is Pleasant, and so is the sound. I’m really impressed with this DVD. Positive, it doesn’t have many extras (fair a few “bonus trailers” and very short featurette), but the quality of the DVD itself is incredible.

I’m contented I’ve finally been able to glimpse the movie again in widescreen. I’ve seen Short Circuit 2 recently on HBO (a few times), and I didn’t explore that in the rotund hide version that I was missing so considerable going on in the movie.

If widescreen isn’t your thing, you serene have no worries. The DVD comes with the “bulky veil” version as well. The disc is a flipper, meaning one side is widescreen while the other is fullscreen, thus satisfying both crowds.

As for the movie itself, I savor it. I’ve always loved this movie. I like it more than the first Short Circuit, and mainly because this one focuses more on “Number Five” (Johnny Five) than the first movie. It’s humorous at times, and there’s even one share of the movie I catch teary-eyed, no joke. I deem this movie teaches many valuable things, such as building and strengthening friendships (through the interaction between Johnny Five and the other characters), and it shows how to atomize the boundaries and treat everyone as equals. It also shows you the delicacy of life…. (later in the movie–I won’t SPOIL IT for you!) .

I recommend this DVD for anyone that might need a excellent laugh here and there. There are a few “cuss words” in the movie, so I don’t know if I would recommend this for children that are too young…. but I would abominate for children to miss such a movie. I saw it when I was 8, and now I’m 21 and I serene cherish it. That says a lot for a movie that’s now “feeble.”

If you choose to not catch it, then please at least rent it. I contemplate you’ll accumulate it to be a charming movie that most people will procure something out of.

It would probably be mighty like this; two everyman protagonists, themes of loneliness and isolation and yearning, a robot who is far more humane than his human counterparts…

Unlike the first Short Circuit Movie where there wasn’t worthy time to eye the character of Jonhhy Five, or invest the machine with character, the second film does fair that and it does it very well. The viewer’s suspension of disbelief is fully engaged- even as an adult I catch myself lulled into feeling a deep sesne of pathos and compassion for Number Johnny Five. This is in fragment due to an extraordinary pre-CGI special effects/machine team and also due to the exceptionally unselfconscious acting of the human cast: Fisher Stevens ((the dreadful guye from hackers) ) is truly phenomenal as Ben Jharvi, an Indian ((I contemplate) ) computer programmer who is as inept at expressing his feelings as Johnny Five is as conception his acquire) ; Michael McKean and Cynthia Gibb are also large (McKean is perfect as a petty conman who betrays and then saves Johnny Five) . The actors did an astonishing job interacting with the machine and their performances add subtly comely layers of humor and sentiment to whta could have been a really terrible movie but instead becomes a well-behaved thing to spy.

OK. The script is somewhat shoddy at times and the pacing is not so well-handled. There are some dead-end scenes, but for the most fragment everything really hangs together well- Johnny Five stumbles through several mishaps trying to understand why humans behave as they do and why he feels what he feels. Oh, there’s a walk scene situation to the godawful “I need a hero,” song. The kitschy 80’s pop net wears a tad thin afterawhile. But then, this is a kid film at heart, and a rather recent one at that.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Short Circuit 2! Click Here

One scene always breaks my heart, one of my all-time accepted poignant scenes: Johnny five, after being caught by the cops, is taken and chained in the police basement- the stolen property room. He is slowly reading two books, page by page. His friends near to have him released- when allowed to leave he breaks his chains easily and sadly leaves (you spy, he could have left at anytime had he wanted to; there’s some Sadean undertones in how #J5 repeatedly allows himself to be demeaned and debased and almost destroyed by humans without fighting help lethally- which he easily could… a postmodern and mechanical kin to Justine, perhaps) .

The books he was so slowly reading were Pinochio and Frankenstein. It always slays me, unbiased like the Rockbiter’s monologue in The Never Ending Account (”They gape like broad, strong hands…”) .

This one is so remarkable better, in my view, than Spielberg’s immoral A.I., if only in that Stevie over-reached himself (again) on that crite film; trying to execute a ’serious’ film about ’serious’ issues… and then he tacked on a completely odious ending.

This film has no such pretensions- it mostly aims at fun. Because of that it achieves more than most serious cinema struggling with the same themes of technology and identity.

There is a point in Intolerable Cruelty where George Clooney is giving a key sign speech professing his worship that is long enough to accomplish you suspect the Coen brothers have “sold out” into schmaltz. Obnoxious! The film, in typical Coen style, dives into as many twists and turns as is needed in a beneficial thriller. Fortunately, the film is a comedic farce.

Clooney plays Miles Massey, the most prominent divorce lawyer in southern California. A man so splendid at what he does he has a prenuptial contract named after him. Massey’s superb and he knows it. Come the beginning of the film, he and his assistant, Wrigley (Paul Adelstein), are chatting about how listless Massey’s life has become while a sweating client sits between them as the client’s wife describes how she was faded as a sex slave. Massey is that confident of himself.

And confidence is what Clooney is all about. He is simply astonishing. Swaggering around like a peacock while checking to form positive his teeth are neat, Clooney gives his best performance. There is no denying his charm here. Even when he’s being a prig.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Intolerable Cruelty! Click Here

Enter Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a woman who’s only goal is to marry a rich man, score him in some indiscretion and divorce him for half of what he’s worth. She wants to be independent she claims. Massey falls for her completely. She is his match in game-playing and confidence and he must have her.

Thus sets up the Coens’ romantic comedy farce. It’s bizarre at times, but laughable throughout as one coincidental incident sets-up another and turns all the characters on both of their ears. This is probably their fluffiest fragment ever, but highly though-provoking nonetheless.

This film seemed to be a unusual version of the romantic comedies of the 50’s & 60’s. it was overloaded with dialogue, some glance gags, & a few well-timed sexual references provided the laughs. George Clooney plays divorce lawyer Miles Massey who is at a crossroads in his life. Catherine Zeta Jones plays Marilyn Rexroth who is divorcing her cheating husband. The latter appears immune to the formers charms. But soon, the predictable path to the films conclusion is clearly in view. The courtromm scenes dragged & CZJ & GC simply lacked the sexual sparks that would have made this a four star film. I give it three stars because, the supporting cast of Julia Duffy, Billy Bob Thornton, & Cedric the entertainer provided the laughs. Perhaps, Anjelina Jolie & Brad Pitt would have pulled it off?

I’m both a Cronenberg fan and a Burroughs fan, so maybe my review of this film lacks objectivity. That being said, I contemplate Naked Lunch is quite an achievement, not only visually (Chris Walas’ creatures are unbelievable, Denise Cronenberg’s costumes are handsome and authentic to the film’s period), but in terms of screenwriting and in the realm of ideas. Burroughs’ fresh could be said to be about a number of things, but I contain the film is mainly about how our appetites and urges manifest themselves if they are not acknowledged. Bill Lee, the protagonist in the movie, spends worthy of the first section of the film avoiding his need to write. After he flees to Interzone, he begins to hallucinate that his typewriter is a giant talking bug that orders him to compile “reports” on various and sundry people and subjects, such as his sexual proclivities, his relationships with friends and acquaintances as well as his need to have a reason to build. Noteworthy is made, subtly about the connection between mental imbalance, orgasms and the creative process.Cronenberg has picked up on a theme that runs through all of Burroughs’ writing, namely the consequences of living in a society that labels outrageous all healthy forms of personal release. For Burroughs, and by extension Cronenberg, this includes sex, artistic expression and liberated spend of language. In the unusual, being denied these outlets leads people to all kinds of perversions of personal power, drug addiction and insanity. Cronenberg uses different means, but shows his audience the psychic toll of denying one’s deep personal needs. In all, a amazing hallucinatory rush, with a tremendous cast (especially Peter Weller, who has never been better chosen for a role) and a whole feast for discussion by thoughtful filmgoers everywhere.

As a devout Burroughs fan, of course I was a runt hesitant to understanding this movie initially. And having read the book “Naked Lunch” prior to watching the film, I was at a loss as to what I expected. Certainly there was no arrangement this book could translate into a movie…even “The Wall” director Alan Parker would have been lost.

In essence, Cronenberg didn’t attempt to recreate the book verbatim. Instead he deftly interwove Burroughs’ life with some of the routines and rants from the book. This movie is not for the fainthearted as it shows man-sized mugwumps and talking typwriter/insects who are really operatives for a covert attempt to penetrate Interzone, using a hapless writer, Bill Lee, as their chief perceive.

Definitive moments in Burroughs’ life, such as his relationship with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac and the death of his wife Joan at his gain hand are featured in the movie. It also gives a surreal biography to the birth of the writer in Burroughs as he attempts to write his scheme out of the guilt of his wife’s death and the drugs that numbed the difficulties of his life.

Those who believe that this movie had no right area or if they did deem there was a place that the location wasn’t linear, then they can’t be that ample a fan of Burroughs. His life was not normal, his fans are not normal, and his mode of thinking was, frankly, insane. Cronenberg does a shiny job getting inside the mind of the writer, the genius, the man, William S. Burroughs. Retract a slither into his mind, ladies and gentlemen, and be changed forever.
