This was a great movie from a lost age of silly moviemaking. While the sequals were too trying, the original is a classic from the 80s. Porky’s, Animal House, Stripes and Police Academy are all cut from the same mold. Silly, mindless fun. This was when movies were dumb and a whole lot more fun!

This is by far the best and most consistently funny of the 7 Police Academy films. They pretty much got worse as they went on. Some of the funniest gags take place in this one: Tackleberry going nuts during obstacle training, Harris driving the motorbike into the back of a horse, Hightower tearing the seats out of the car and also flipping one over with his hands, the infamous podium/hooker scene, and of course Mahoney and Jones(the sound effect guy) have several funny scenes. Fans of the series will want to have this. The DVD isn’t bad for a cheap one. It includes only the full screen version(bummer), the languages/subtitles(of course), cast and crew bios, interactive menus where you can read facts about the film, a reel recommendations section which suggests another Steve Guttenburg film and other films that are also funny (such as Austin Powers), and a scene selection which is common but welcome. The best part of the DVD other than the film itself is the inclusion of all 7 theatrical trailers for each Police Academy film. Genuinely funny and contrary to other reviews, this is no where near the worst film ever made. See it for yourself many many many times on many many many different occasions (inside Police Academy joke).

This video, originally released in 1984 on Laserdisc and scheduled for DVD release on Aug. 21, 2001 is a must-have for any serious opera collector. Where, today, could you find a cast of this calibre: Freni, Domingo, Bumbry, Quilico, Ghiaurov and Furlanetto, conducted by James Levine? The sets are austere yet atmospheric and the costumes are beautiful and of the correct period — a quality rarely seen in today’s opera houses. The performance from March 1983 finds all the singers in fine voice. Freni, Domingo (even with a crack or two), Ghiaurov and Furlanetto are not to be faulted. Miss Bumbry’s tendency to sharp slightly and in some instances distance herself from the music (you can see the technical gears working) and Mr. Quilico’s blustery manner are small flaws that once gotten used to, seem to fade into the background of this generally outstanding document. Mr. Levine’a authoritative, stylish and energetic conducting coaxes an exciting performance out of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and David Stivender’s chorus. This is a live performance so sometimes a microphone may pick up a violin or a soprano or tenor chorister’s voice a little too accurately, but again — that is a small price to pay for this calibre of performance. This DVD is heartily recommended and will hold it’s place for a long time to come as THE video DON CARLO to have. Also, the DVD quality of this performance is to be looked forward to because of the flawed pressings on the Pioneer Laserdics when they were originally released. Bravo, Pioneer for making this DON CARLO availabale, finally, on DVD!

Watching this production on DVD is bittersweet only because you realize that to have seen it in the Met live must have been one of those rare and exceptional performances everyone wishes they experienced. The singing and acting of all of the principal singers is superlative, with top billing going to Freni, Bumbry, Ghiaurov and Domingo. The strength, drama and beauty of Freni’s portrayal as Elisabetta here in the duets, arias and in the auto da fe is not to be missed. She is well paired with Domingo who gives a equally exceptional singing and dramatic performance. The strength of the other cast members, orchestra, the direction of James Levine and the chorus all enhance this performance.

I wish the DVD had more bonus features and had more detailed chapter selection so that you are able to maneuver through the DVD to specific parts of any Act but these are only minor drawbacks given the overall strong performance. If you find that you are listening to only one or two CDs of the full audio recording of this opera at any given time, you will have quite a different experience to this DVD. Once it goes into your DVD player, you will be mesmerized from start to finish and find yourself applauding and yelling “Bravi!” along with the audience in the end. A worthwhile investment for any music lover.

Many anime movies based on a TV series are basically like extremely long episodes, though often with with better animation and music.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bleach Movie 1: Memories of Nobody! Click Here

And such is the case with the first movie based on the hit anime series, “Bleach: Memories of Nobody.” It’s not a perfect movie adaptation — several regulars are reduced to brief cameos — but it is graced with some extremely solid action sequences, lovely animation, a solid mix of comedy and tragedy, and a nice little storyline for the perpetually stressed-out Ichigo.

After disposing of a Hollow, Ichigo and Rukia encounter puffy creatures with pointed red heads. When the things start getting pushy, a strange Shinigami girl named Senna appears and wipes many of them out.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Bleach Movie 1: Memories of Nobody! Click Here

Turns out these things are Blank (amnesiac) souls from the Valley of Screams in the Severed World, and the only way to get rid of ‘em is to find the Memory Rosary, a being that contains all their memories. As Ichigo struggles to keep an eye on the flighty Senna, he is charged with finding the Memory Rosary and protecting it from the mysterious man who is leading the Blanks.

Guess who the Memory Rosary is. I’ll give you a hint: it’s someone not in the regular cast.

Anyway, a bunch of Soul Reapers are dispatched to bring the Memory Rosary back with them, only to have her snatched away by a strange man named Ganryu, who has a grudge against the Soul Reapers. Ichigo and Rukia discover the portal into the Severed World — but there’s only an hour before the worlds of the living and the dead collide, with devastating results. And even with the help of all his Soul Reaper friends, Ichigo may not be able to prevail…

Anyone not familiar with Tite Kubo’s “Bleach” series will probably be utterly lost during “Memories of Nobody,” especially given the vast cast of Good Guys who show up without introduction. The entire movie plays out like a very long anime filler episode, but with a lot more new characters, villains, and introducing an entire dimension between the Soul Society and the living world. And an accidental Ichigo-Kon kiss.

Fortunately “Memories of Nobody” does a good job preserving the flavor of the “Bleach” anime series. It starts off rather lightweight and a bit talk-heavy until Ganryu decides to show himself, leading into a clash between the Soul Reapers and his nasty little minions. Those rapid-fire battles are astounding — quick, lethal and full of special powers (including Ichigo riding on Renji’s zanpakuto). And the climax is simply spectacular — a bloody savage duel between Ganryu and Ichigo on a vast leafless tree, even as the Severed World starts falling apart.

And the writers strike a good balance in “Memories of Nobody” — we have acrobatic battles, flashy powers, a bit of Hollow-slaying, and some poignant moments for Ichigo and Senna. Fortunately amid all this serious stuff, there’s some humor as well — including a running gag about ambulance crews trying to resuscitate Ichigo’s soulless body, which he has a bad habit of simply dropping any old place. I’ve always wanted to see that happen.

Even the animation has been souped-up here. It’s a little more detailed and defined than animation for a weekly TV show, and there are some lovely visuals — sprays of maple leaves, the nighttime lights of Karakura, and the explosive battles between Soul Reapers. And the soundtrack — particularly the violin solo — is simply lovely.

The characterization is one weak spot, though. Most of the main cast — including Uryu, Chad, Orihime and all of Urahara’s little gang — are reduced to standing on a bridge waiting for Ichigo to come back. And somehow Ganryu is never quite compelling — we never find out why he was exiled, or what motivations he has beyond wanting revenge on the Soul Society.

But this is a well-written story for Ichigo Kurosaki, — his gruff, slightly awkward personality is captured beautifully, as well as his iron-clad determination to protect anybody he’s become fond of. Senna is a character so completely flaky that she makes Orihime look like Eeyore, but she does manage to be likable and good-hearted despite that.

“Bleach: Memories of Nobody” is not quite as good as it could have been, but it’s a solid adventure for Ichigo and his assorted Soul Reaper friends. An entertaining, fast-paced little ride.

Bleach is the story of Ichigo Kurosaki, an obstinate high-school boy who became imbued with the powers of a Soul Reaper. Soul Reapers come from the afterlife, an alternate dimension known as The Soul Society and it is their job to police our world, bring peace to errant souls, and destroy those back go mad, becoming massive soul-devouring monstrosities known as Hollows. So basically, the them is a blurring of the line between life and afterlife. It’s chock full of action, sports a cast of characters so massive I can’t recall most of their names at any given time, and an extremely complex history and series of rules that it operates by. These things make “Bleach” one of the outstanding ongoing anime series, but they also make it extremely hard on new viewers. “Memories of Nobody” does as good a job as can be expected in welcoming Bleach newcomers, but it will mostly appeal to fans of the television series as an interesting and charming standalone addition to its canon.

The star of the show is a girl named Senna, who Ichigo and Rukia encounter while investigating a creepy phenomena of faceless apparitions gathering in the world of the living. While humans can see none of this, it is a bad omen of things to come and while the Soul Society researches on their end, Ichigo and Rukia have to attempt to sort things out in the world of the living. Senna is easily among the most instantly lovable characters in the Bleach pantheon. She embodies all that is carefree and charming about anime characters. But while she jerks Ichigo around, the Soul Society comes to a staggering conclusion about her and sends several powerful Captains to take her into custody. A typically good-hearted and hard-headed Ichigo resists, but before a fight breaks out several powerful and mysterious warriors appear to claim Senna as well. The end result is a potential cataclysmic collision between the worlds of the living and the dead, eradicating both. Bleach fans, start your engines.

As with most anime films based on ongoing series’, the story is set up not to affect existing continuity in any way. However, “Memories of Nobody” makes for a surprisingly poignant tale. Bleach usually keeps the tone fairly light and tends to focus on the humor and idiosyncrasies of the characters as well as the perpetually escalating multiple plotlines. Here, the focus is almost entirely on Ichigo and Senna and their story produces some surprising results. The idea of the blank souls combining and searching for lost memories was both interesting and tragic. The action is pretty sweet here with ban-kais (powerful attacks used conservatively but spectacularly in the series) being unleashed left-and-right. Several of the Soul Society’s finest make appearances in the climax and show their stuff. New viewers can either enjoy the eye candy or spend that time saying “who’s that? And that? What was that thing she just did?” and the like. Lots of little cool character moments -including one between Rukia and her brother, who was once intent on executing her- will be lost on them, but fans will cheer. The ending was extremely emotional -though a bit confusing- and left me pretty shellshocked which is what really caught me off guard about this film. I was expecting fluff and got some genuinely moving drama. Not too shabby.

“Memories of Nobody” is a definite must-see for fans of the anime, but newcomers would be advised to watch “Bleach” at least through Season 2 to know what the hell is going on a lot of the time. Fans of Chad, Uryu, and Orehime: sorry. Better luck next time.

I was beginning to wonder if James Bond was dead, but along comes Daniel Craig to breathe new life into the role, giving us a lean, mean 007 that blows previous Bonds away. Martin Campbell went back to the basics, retooling Bond and giving him a much more physical presence, reminiscent of Sean Connery. From the opening sequence we see we are in for a real treat, as Campbell takes nothing for granted. He knows he has to earn the audience’s respect, and he does with a thrilling chase scene in the chaotic urban center of an African republic.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casino Royale! Click Here

Bond really comes across as a rogue agent in Casino Royale, stealing his way into M’s apartment to leave her coded messages, taking risks that threaten painstaking operations and getting himself into jams that require MI6 to bail him out. This is a young impetuous Bond, overanxious and thrilling to watch as Craig fills his role with the energy of a stage actor.

There is also one of the best villains in recent years with Mads Mikkelsen as the cold blooded Le Chiffre. He heads an international cartel not so much bent on world destruction as on taking advantage of the chaos in which we live. He is a much more believable villain than Spectre and relies on much simpler methods of getting his piece of flesh from someone.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casino Royale! Click Here

It is also refreshing to see Bond have a real love interest in Eva Green, not the usual banter that rings hollow. Bond is not afraid to expose himself in this movie, revealing a much more vulnerable figure than we have seen before.

MI6 also finds itself as a much more porous organization, capable of being infiltrated so that Bond doesn’t know who to trust in key moments. All he has is the support of M, played to deadpan perfection by Judi Dench.

Everything about this movie is fresh and clean, including the opening credits. Bond hasn’t looked this good since the early films in the series with Sean Connery. There is even an amusing scene where Bond wins a 1964 Aston Martin in a poker game, a tip of the hat to Goldfinger.

I loved the first Blu-Ray edition. I have not seen the Collector’s Edition yet, but they have added so much more to this. I got this from the BluRay.com website….

This is a great set for people who want BOTH movies, and don’t have the Anniversary Edition of ROCKY HORROR. The two movies are great, but for completely differing reasons. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is a cult classic with an established fan base, and SHOCK TREATMENT stands on its own as a curious sequel which heads off in a new direction both musically and thematically.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Rocky Horror Picture Show / Shock Treatment! Click Here

The set here is a special 3 disc edition with two discs devoted to ROCKY HORROR and a single disc for SHOCK TREATMENT. The ROCKY HORROR portion includes the movie, audience participation tracks and video, commentary by Patricia Quinn and O’Brien, segments from a “Where Are They Now?” special on VH-1, and tons of featurettes featuring cast, crew, and fans. It is a rerelease of the 2000-2001 anniversary edition, so if you own that… no need to buy this again (just track down SHOCK TREATMENT on its own).

SHOCK TREATMENT includes a remastered print of the movie (for the first time in widescreen on DVD), a commentary track from the fan club president and his friend (they tell trivia and do some of their “act” for screenings), two features with interviews from cast and crew members about the making of the film and the score, and trailers (which are bizarre and worth a look). Richard O’Brien does not make an appearance in ANY of the extras, so we have to rely on people involved with the production such as director Jim Sharman and Patricia Quinn to fill us in.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Rocky Horror Picture Show / Shock Treatment! Click Here

The Rocky Horror Picture Show began its ongoing life as a musical play in London in 1973 (The Rocky Horror Show). Creator Richard O’Brien had recently quit the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar, and passed the time between acting jobs by writing a rock musical which truly entertained him. Combining elements of Alice Cooper, Frankenstein, the fifties revival and the sexual revolution, O’Brien and his creative team (including Superstar director Jim Sharman and set designer Brian Thomson, producer Michael White and acting friend Tim Curry) produced a runaway stage hit. The play won awards and ran for seven years in London (it’s currently on tour in England) and was produced all over the world. Lou Adler brought the play to his Roxy Theatre in L.A. in 1974, intending to introduce it to a major studio for a film version. The film was produced in England at Hammer’s Bray Studios and the nearby Oakley Court castle in Berkshire, using most of the British cast and Americans Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf, and was released in London in August 1975. The USA release the following month came after a disappointingly short run of the play on Broadway. Briefly test-marketed in the states, The Rocky Horror Picture Show flopped, and 20th Century-Fox decided to recoup some of its production costs by showing it as a midnight movie in April 1976. Early Rocky fans in New York began performing “audience participation,” ranging from joking in response to the dialogue and singing along to acting out the film in costume in front of the screen. Fox released more prints as the New York and L.A. scenes got media attention, and the film was soon playing in over 250 theaters across the country. After years of midnight showings, the film became one of the top five highest-grossing musicals in U.S. release, and one of the few to earn more than $100 million. The 2006 DVD release includes the original two-disc set released in 2000. The first disc contains the film, with the option of viewing UK or USA versions (the UK version includes the complete “Superheroes” song, while the USA version edits out two verses), commentary by Richard O’Brien and Patricia Quinn, and an optional “audience participation” track. The second disc contains supplementary material, including the 1995 36-minute documentary (made for the laserdisc) featuring interviews with O’Brien, Sharman, Thomson, Adler and most of the film cast; outtakes from the film; 1999 cast interviews from VH1’s “Behind the Music”; trailers and more. Shock Treatment was touted in 1981 as being “not a sequel, not a prequel, but an equal to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” It more closely resembles a musical sequel, using the Brad and Janet characters (played by new actors) in an ironically prescient “reality TV” setting where fast-food magnate Farley Flavors controls Denton USA, a giant TV studio. Brad and Janet appear on the game show “Marriage Maze,” hosted by blind Viennese Bert Schnick (Barry Humphries, creator of Dame Edna). Rocky alumni O’Brien, Patricia Quinn, Nell Campbell and Charles Gray appear, with many of the Rocky crew behind the scenes, including director Jim Sharman. The songs, hybrids of Rocky Horror meets new wave, are ambitious but somewhat strained. Shock Treatment never took off with most Rocky fans, and can be viewed today as a fun early 80s artifact with its own set of fans. Richard O’Brien’s musical followup is notable for its use of the creative team behind the unique success of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

“Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” is perhaps the best movie ever made. Unlike other campy movies, there are virtually no lulls — each scene is packed with brilliant one-liners, ludicrious characters (portrayed by equally crazy actors), fun music, and tons of hairspray. While Roger Ebert has claimed that the movie was intended to be satirical and hillarious, its dated-ness adds to the effect, inadvertently creating the funniest and most watchable movie of the entire Russ Meyer catalouge (though other gems of Meyer’s include “Supervixens,” “Vixen,” “Up,” and the delightful, “Fater Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”). Dolly Reed’s often failed attempt at an American accent only adds to the fun. The reason “BVD” isn’t more widley loved: it takes a person with certain sense of humor to enjoy the high level of camp this film offers. If you enjoy being tricked into thinking that a legitimately excellent film is really so bad that it’s good, indulge yourself in the debauchery.

“Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” is released in Japan as “Wild Party,” and the latter title might have told you everthing you see in it; and the director is Russ Meyer, famous for his movies like “Faster Pussycat, Kill!, Kill!” and “Vixen”….. Oh, if you haven’t seen them, you can guess the contents, I’m sure.

Actually, “Beyond,” which major studio 20th Century Fox asked Meyer to direct, is less outrageous, considering the track record this cult director had made, and was going to make. But still, for ordinary people, it is a shocking experience to see almost every genre is mixed in it: love story (too corny one), a sucess story (of Josie and the Pussycats-like rock band, I mean it), and even a gory horror movie (with the sound of 20th Century Fox’s trademark fanfare, and Richard Wagner’s classic you have heard in Coppola’s very famous film!). And within less than 2 hours!!

However, remember, those were the days. Don’t take anything too seriously. Besides, the soundtrack is great and if you like those songs of 1960s, you will love it. My favorite is “Candy Man,” an Animals-type song, and believe it or not, in Japan they released a single cut from the soundtrack with the credit of Carrie Nations, the fictional band Dolly Read and others play in “Beyond.” Oh, I almost forgot to say, you have a glimpse of “Strawberry Alarm Clock,” psychedelic rock band that got the No.1 of the Billboard Chart with their “Incense and Peppermint,” which you heard in “Austin Powers.” They play it here, but sorry, it’s lip-sync. And look for Pam Grier (credited as Pamela Grier), of “Jackie Brown.”

Enjoy the extremism of filmmaking, I dare you.

(Technical thing: as the original film was shot in cinemascope, and Russ Meyer uses the screen wide, some scenes lose the impact on TV’s small screen. Still, there is unmistakeably Russ Meyer’s touch here and there in the movie. Don’t miss it.)

“Rascal,” the Disney/Buena Vista live-action film based on the 1963 million-plus, best-selling “memoir of a better era” by Wisconsin-born author Sterling North, is finally available on video and DVD — and, although the wait has been far too long, the film stands up to the test of time. Bill Mumy is charming as Sterling as a child, but the animals steal this show. Masterfully directed by the same gent who created the best of Disney’s nature flicks, this warm-hearted, nostalgic view of 1918-era southern Wisconsin (the fictional setting of Brailsford Junction is based on the author’s hometown of Edgerton, Wisconsin, located in Rock County, nearby a meandering Rock River and one of the largest lakes in the state, Koshkonong) will please adults and children alike. Having the film widely available again, 33 years after its first theatrical release, is almost worth the shortcomings of the DVD (and those all involve the decision not to include any extras — no theatrical trailers, no biographical info on the talented cast, no info on Sterling North [1906-1974, also the author of “So Dear to My Heart,” made into another film by Disney in 1949], no info on the Sterling North Society of Edgerton and its restoration of Sterling’s childhood home as a museum, etc. etc.), all of which would have added immeasurably to the movie’s enjoyment. Nevertheless, a first-rate effort by a talented team and a film made during the golden age of Disneyeseque films about boys and their pets.

“Rascal” is the true story of a baby raccoon which author Sterling North found when he was 11 years old, and raised until it was time to set the raccoon back in the wild.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rascal! Click Here

This is a sweet story, and the bits which may cause some parents concern in the book itself are not even present in the movie, making it sweeter still.

There are spoken threats to the raccoon (neighbors warn that if the raccoon starts to raid gardens, he will be shot), but it never goes beyond that.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rascal! Click Here

That said, there are scenes where Sterling’s father has a dead turkey slung over his shoulder, and another where the plucked turkey is ready to become dinner.

Also, in one scene Sterling’s father invites the town’s new minister and Sterling’s teacher in to dinner, and proceeds to get them drunk on hard cider.

One other matter which may cause concern for some - although it is based on reality - is that Sterling’s mother has passed away, and, to compound matters, his father is a travelling entrepreneur, and he often leaves young Sterling at home alone for days on end (it is made clear in the movie that this is not ok, although Sterling’s father doesn’t seem to see it that way at first).

Finally, there is a scene in the beginning - and one in the end - where the raccoons tangle with a bobcat. Nobody gets particularly hurt, but it might be a bit scary for a few moments for younger children.

If the above are ok for your family, then “Rascal” is a very sweet film, and we will be watching it again.

And, oh yes, the fellow who plays Sterling is none other than Bill Mumy - yes, that Bill Mumy, who played Will Robinson in “Lost in Space”.

CHILDREN OF PARADISE has a history almost as remarkable as the film itself. Production was just beginning when Paris fell to the Nazis; the work was subsequently filmed piecemeal over a period of several years, much of it during the height of World War II. And yet astonishingly, this elaborate portrait of 19th Century French theatre and the people who swirl through it shows little evidence of the obvious challenges faced by director Marcel Carne, his cast, and his production staff. CHILDREN OF PARADISE seems to have been created inside a blessed bubble of imagination, protected from outside forces by the sheer power of its own being.

The story is at once simple and extremely complex. A mime named Baptiste (Jean-Louis Barrault) falls in love with a street woman known as Garance (Arletty)–and through a series of coincidences and his own love for her finds the inspiration to become one of the most beloved stage artists of his era. But when shyness causes him to avoid consumation of the romance, Baptiste loses Garance to her own circle of admirers–a circle that includes a vicious member of the Paris underworld (Marcel Herrand), rising young actor (Pierre Brasseur), and an egotistical and jealous aristocrat (Louis Salou.) With the passage of time, Garance recognizes that she loves Baptiste as deeply as he does her… but now they must choose between each other and the separate lives they have created for themselves.

While the film is sometimes described as dreamy in tone, it would be more appropriately described as dreamy in tone but extremely earthy in content. Instead of giving us a glamorous portait of life in theatre, it presents 19th Century theatre as it actually was: dominated by noisy audiences perfectly capable of riot, the actors usually poor and hungry and mixing freely with criminal elements, the desperate struggle to rise above the chaos to create something magical on stage. And while the film is not sexually explicit by any stretch of the imagination, by 1940s standards CHILDREN OF PARADISE was amazingly frank in its portrayal of Garance’s often casual liaisons; American cinema would not achieve anything similar for another twenty years.

Everything about the film seems to swirl in a riot of people, costumes, and overlapping relationships, a sort of mad confusion of life lived in a very elemental manner. And the cast carries the director’s vision to perfection. Jean-Louis Barrault is both a brilliant actor and brilliant mime, perfectly capturing the strange innocence his role requires; the famous Arletty offers a divine mixture of exhaustion, sensuality, and self-awareness that makes Garance and her fatal attraction uniquely believable. And these performances do not stand in isolation: there is not a false note in the entire cast, the roles of which cover virtually every level of society imaginable.

With its complex story, vivid performances, and stunning set pieces, the film has a longer running time than one might expect, and some may feel it is slow; I myself, however, did not read it as slow so much as precise. It takes the time to allow the characters and their various stories to develop fully in the viewer’s mind. I must also note that while a knowledge of theatre history isn’t required to fall under the spell of this truly fascinating film, those who do have that background will find it particularly appealing. I regret to say that I have not seen the film on DVD, and I look forward to that. But the double-tape video release, while plagued with occasional blips and streaks, is still very nice; the sound quality is good; and the subtitles are very clear and easy to read and follow. But be it on DVD, video, or better still the big screen, this is truly a film that must be seen by any one that appreciates world cinema. CHILDREN OF PARADISE is one of the few films that can be viewed repeatedly, one of the truly great masterpieces of cinema. Strongly, strongly recommended.

Children of Paradise is, quite simply, the best film ever made. It’s one of those strange, lyrical movies that must be seen at exactly the right time in life, or its true meaning is elusive. The story works on many levels — what IS this about? Paris? Life? The Theater? Thumbing one’s nose at the Nazis? Thumbing one’s nose at Arletty? Yes. But mostly, it’s about the timelessness of Love and all it entails. It’s about pain and retreating into — and out of — dreams. Children of Paradise is about watching life unfold from the safety of the “paradise” — the peanut gallery, the balcony, the cheap seats. In English, the language of this film is haunting; in French, it’s sublime perfection. I saw this film for the first time in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was 19. I was also recovering from a devestating head-injury which robbed me of my ability to speak French. For the first part of Children of Paradise, I struggled with subtitles. Then something magical happened: I understood. “I dreamed. I hoped. I waited.” Universal. Children of Paradise is not for everyone. It’s a film of the heart — raw and powerful. On the surface, the imagery is nothing special — but combined with the meaning of Prévert’s words, it’s a force to be reckoned with. This film is nothing short of a masterpiece.

I ordered this DVD for my 2 yr old and when we got it, the first 2 episodes played wonderfully. When the DVD got to “Minnie Red Riding Hood”, before the opening credits were finished, the DVD let out an awful noise that startled everyone in the room (the sound is similar to the emergency broadcast system’s noise). After several moments of bleeping and frozen-ness, the DVD played again for another several seconds and then blared again. There was no noticeable damage to the disc and wiping it off did nothing to stop the blaring. We tried several times to figure out what was wrong, and every time it did the same thing. I called Amazon’s customer service, and they emailed me a return label without any kind of hassle - great customer service - and mailed a second copy of the DVD to us. That DVD arrived today, and wouldn’t you know, at the exact same spot of the DVD the exact same thing happened. This makes me think the entire batch/pressing of this DVD for this particular round is defective. Again, Amazon provided quick customer service, emailed me another return label, and will refund my money for the DVD.

Recapping, the content of the DVD held my daughter’s attention, it’s just that both copies we received were defective. I’m glad Amazon has good customer service who resolved both issues quickly and without hassle.

This is such a great DVD! My daughters are 2 and 1 and they love it! Our friends have boys the same ages and they love it as well. I love that Minnie and Daisy are in every episode - it’s nice to see female characters more often. Some other things that are great about it:

1) There are 4 episodes plus bonus features so you get a lot of Mickey for the price. It’s a better value than other Mickey DVD’s, with some only having 2 episodes.

2) This is so educational. There is tons of counting, color recognition, games to match items, and they are always on a “mystery” to find/save something and it’s fun to watch it evolve from start to finish. My children love it!

3) The voices are cute and the characters, in my opinion, are not annoying. They are funny and they talk right to the screen, so it’s great to watch children answer back.

4) The familiar and predictable pattern of each show is perfect for toddlers. My children yell out what’s coming, and they highly anticipate the “Hot Dog” song at the end, as most children do. It’s all very catchy and well-written.

5) We don’t have cable to watch Playhouse Disney, so it’s great they offer these shows on DVD. We also love My Friends Tigger & Pooh on DVD - another great kid’s show. I like that we don’t get subjected to promos, ads and other Disney-related luring as seen on the channel. We just get the show on DVD and that’s it…no filtering required!

I highly recommend this DVD for toddlers. It will be a great addition to your DVD library! :)

Finally, one TV’s most beloved sitcoms from the 1960’s arrives on DVD July 21, 2009. After releasing Lucille Ball’s first series in its entirety, “I Love Lucy”, CBS Home Video is bringing out, what I consider, one of the best television shows of all-time.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lucy Show: The Official First Season! Click Here

“The Lucy Show” was Lucille Ball’s follow-up to her immensely popular 1950’s TV program, and at first she was hesitant to do another weekly series for a variety of reasons: first, she knew the work involved in doing a TV show week after week, and secondly she also didn’t know if the audience would accept her playing a widow, as she and Desi Arnaz were so closely identified as America’s first TV couple. Since she and Desi were now divorced, having them star in a television show together was virtually impossible. One of the stipulations she had with the new CBS show was that she wanted Desi to be its executive producer, (which he was that first season), as Lucy knew Desi had the mind and ability to produce a top-rated show, and she wanted her best friend, Vivian Vance, to star along with her. Lucy’s demands were met.

“The Lucy Show”, originally titled “The Lucille Ball Show” in its inception, aired its first episode on October 1, 1962. Lucy played Lucy Carmichael, a widow raising 2 children, a daughter Chris, played by Candy Moore, and a son Jerry, played by Jimmy Garrett. Lucy shared her home with her best friend Vivian, played superbly by Vance, who had a son Sherman, portrayed by Ralph Hart. Although many TV historians state that it was Ann Romano, from “One Day at a Time”, who played TV’s first divorced woman, that distiction, however, belongs to Vivian Vance, who was the medium’s first divorcee in this series. “The Lucy Show” followed the adventures of Lucy and Vivian, as they raised their children alone, and encountered various mishaps while living without men. The series explored what it was like for two women maintaining a household all alone, and the series depicted the problems each had with their personal lives, such as finding Mr. Right.

“The Lucy Show” is one of my favorite shows ever, and I actually love it even more than “I Love Lucy”. This long awaited boxset of the series’ first season, features 30 episodes, that have been rarely seen over the years. This first season is filmed in glorious black and white, but subsequent seasons were filmed in color as Lucille Ball knew they could be more easily sold in syndication than the black and white ones. The show continued to be broadcast in black and white until the 1965 season, but at the beginning of the 1963 season filming in B&W was discontinued. These 30 shows are some of the best work Lucille Ball ever did in her career, albeit they have hardly been seen by newer audiences. Many of the writers from “I Love Lucy” wrote many of these 30 shows, and their originality and creativity is evident. The best episodes from this season are: “Lucy and Viv Put in a TV Antenna”, in which Lucy and Vivian go to extremes to go up on the roof to install a new antenna, as their signal is gone. This episode is hilarious, especially when one watches it during this day in time as many of us have cable and satellite, but the writing is dead on, and the performances, along with Lucy and Viv’s physical comedy, are at its zenith. Another great show is “Lucy and Viv Put In A Shower”, where the roomates install a new shower, as they realize having one bathroom doesn’t cut it for a home housing 5 people. While doing the shower scene Lucille Ball almost drowned, and thanks to Vivian Vance, she was saved. One of my favorite Christmas shows from any series is in this set and is entitled “Together For Christmas”, as Lucy and Vivian argue over a tree. Each wants to have a tree decorated to each other’s taste, so to make a compromise, they each put up a tree in the living room. They eventually have a fight and destroy the other’s tree, with Lucy going so far as sawing Viv’s!

“The Lucy Show” is one of those rare network TV shows that never left the top 10 during its six year run on CBS. It actually finished its final season on the network in the early spring of 1968 at at whopping #2 in the Nielsens. The series would return that fall under a new title, “Here’s Lucy”, with a completey new format. “The Lucy Show” finished its first season at number 5, a solid hit, as the audience welcomed Lucille Ball and her co-horts into their home week after week. Important to note too is that Gale Gordon wouldn’t start appearing until the following season. In the first year, a banker named My. Barnsdahl, played by character actor Charles Lane, supervised Lucy’s trust fund left to her by her husband.

The series’ theme music was created and performed by Wilbur Hatch, who did the music for “I Love Lucy”.

Lucille Ball would go on to win two Emmy’s for her role in this series in subsequent seasons, and various guest stars would pop up over the years, like Joan Crawford, Milton Berle, Carol Burnett, and Ann Southern.

There have been a handful of “Lucy Show” episodes that have been put out on home video and DVD over the years, but these are the public domain shows that were never cleaned up, and they were the edited and syndicated broadcast shows that were jumpy and scratchy. These 30 shows in this boxset have been beautifully restored from the studio’s 35 mm prints and come with renewed sound, and according to studio reps, they look amazing. They are also uncut.

This boxset also comes with a new interview with Lucille Ball’s daughter Lucy Arnaz, and for the first time in years Jimmy Garrett is interviewed , discussing the show and his TV mom. There are also rare commercials featuring “The Lucy Show’s” network promos.

If having “The Lucy Show” on DVD isn’t enough for you, talk is “Here’s Lucy”, Lucy’s 3rd series, is coming to DVD this summer too with the complete first season. “Here’s Lucy” had a DVD release in 2004 featuring some of the best episodes during it’s run, but like “The Lucy Show”, it will be the first time that complete season boxsets will be released. I am in Heaven!

Don’t forget too that “I Love Lucy-The Complete Series” , is also available.

UPDATE!!!! LUCY’S THIRD SERIES “HERE’S LUCY” WILL BE AVAILABLE ON DVD WITH THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON ON AUGUST 25TH, 2009!!!

I can’t remember how many years ago it was when I wrote, emailed and called CBS Home Entertainment to beg for them to release THE LUCY SHOW on DVD. I will tell you that I will always remember how shocked I was when I just received an email from CBS telling me they are releasing The Lucy Show’s First Season on July 21, 2009! I found that begging CBS does pay, when it comes to wanting the BEST classic television shows released, and THE LUCY SHOW is THE BEST! The personal letter CBS wrote me stated that they have remastered The Lucy Show using the original 35 mm negative for a virtually flawless reproduction on dvd!!! I am so happy- FLAWLESS! I’ve been watching those horrible, blurred and faded versions on dvd for years! CBS said that if sales are good for this set, they will be remastering THE LUCY SHOW SEASON 2 IN FLAWLESS COLOR!!! So, to everyone who loves THE LUCY SHOW- order now!! THE LUCY SHOW ran for 6 seasons, so we only need 5 more! HERE’S LUCY SEASON ONE is also in the making from MPI Home Video and that show ran for 6 Seasons as well. After so many years of waiting, this is just like a dream come true for LUCY fans like me!

THE LUCY SHOW premiered on October 1, 1962 on CBS. The show began with Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael, a widow with two children, Chris (Candy Moore), and Jerry (Jimmy Garrett), living in Danfield, Connecticut, sharing her home with divorced friend Vivian Bagley (Vivian Vance) and her son, Sherman (Ralph Hart). Lucy had been left with a substantial trust fund by her late husband, which was managed during this first season by local banker Mr. Barnsdahl (Charles Lane). At the beginning of the 1963-64 season, the character was replaced by Theodore J. Mooney (Gale Gordon, who would remain with the series for the remainder of its run, despite the format change). This First Season also featured in recurring roles, Harry Connors (Dick Martin), Audrey Simmons (Mary Jane Croft), Eddie Collins (Don Briggs), Thelma Green (Carole Cook) and Dorothy Boyer (Dorothy Konrad). Lucy’s little, adorable real life children, Lucie Arnaz age 11 and Desi Arnaz Jr. age 9 make their first television appearances in a few of these first season’s episodes. Lucie Arnaz talks about these first appearances in the wonderful Bonus interview she does for this dvd set. I never knew that when watching the episode, LUCY AND VIV PUT IN A SHOWER when I was a little girl back in the 60’s, that Lucy was actually drowning when she was down under the water, and couldn’t pull herself up. Vivian thought Lucy was under water way too long and reached down to pull her up- literally saving Lucy’s life. The cameras kept rolling and no one in the studio or audience knew what was really going on! It is just so fitting that CBS took the time to make this show flawless, just as Lucy and Vivian’s performances were for all the years they worked together!

Here are the 30 Episodes from Season One, which also include in this long awaited set many fabulous special features:

1. (1 Oct 62) LUCY WAITS UP FOR CHRIS
