There are those who assume Doctor Who to be at its very best when the errant Time Lord is visiting Earth and dealing with alien threats that are Earthbound. The production values alone would be enough to location it apart, but the fantastic script, astonishing manufacture and superlative acting by the entire cast adds a special magic to the indicate that few other Who adventures have ever matched. This is one of those titles I looked forward to long before I knew of any certain plans to release it on DVD. I’ve always felt that, along with the Patrick Troughton narrative “The Seeds of Death”, this is probably the best-photographed record of the entire 26 year history of the show; this is despite the fact that the cameraman’s shadow can be seen drifting in and out of clear shots, but this can be forgiven since it is only the vastly improved DVD resolution that makes it visible at all, a pickle that didn’t exist when it was originally broadcast.

This terrific feature, along with the high quality of the transfer, is an obliging example of the outrageous care the BBC has taken in presenting these stories on DVD. They have taken an almost reverential near in presenting this beloved British national icon to the rest of the world, and this is yet one more reason to steal this DVD.

The DVD is divided into a piece about Caillou and his family and a fraction about Caillou and animals/pets. Viewers will gaze Caillou taking pictures with his Dad’s archaic camera, meeting Gilbert for the first time, picking strawberries, visiting a fire situation and learning about dogs that have jobs. The puppet segments feature Teddy and Gilbert helping Rexy out when he’s upset because he doesn’t have a family and then later Teddy and Rexy dressing up as dogs. The normal musical and real-kids segments are also interwoven throughout (for those that like these, and they’re easily skipped past if you or your kids don’t) . Oh, and don’t danger about whiny/bratty Caillou — he’s hardly anywhere to be found on here.

The special features are character biographies (normally shown at the raze of the TV indicate), Parents’ Information (a few screens to read — taken from the website), coloring pages (only for those with DVD-ROM) and a color-matching game. The narrate and sound quality are tremendous — the portray is full-screen as normal and there are also close-captions (no subtitles) . Also, recall the PBSKids logo on the main menu for a chilly PBSKids promo state.

My daughter loves Caillou, but has been very upset with this video. For some reason the producers decided to interweave memoir vignettes with puppets and live action — my daughter spends the duration of each segment complaining that she wants Caillou, and I employ lots of time with my fingers on the remote. I wish the producers had identified the DVD express more clearly; we’d have bought something else.

Having grown up with Scooby Doo, I mistakenly conception this was the “traditional” TV series achieve on DVD. Not light fare, and a long film, but one worth seeing.

While Bill Murray might be best known for films like Ghostbusters, he deserves powerful greater recognition for his role in The Razor’s Edge; as worthy for his acting ability as his ability to adapt the script to his fresh stage presence. Oscar Wilde’s 1892 retelling of the Bible narrative of Salome, who danced before Herod to rep the death of John the Baptist, was considered so execrable that the High Lord Chamberlain of England refused to grant it a license for public performance–and in the wake of Wilde’s ghastly exposure as a homosexual and his subsequent imprisonment, all of Wilde’s plays were swept from the stage. Wilde, who died in 1900, never saw his play publicly performed.

The worth of Wilde’s plays were reestablished by the 1920s, but even so SALOME, with its convoluted and exotic language and hothouse sense of depravity, remained something of a theatrical untouchable–and certainly so where the cloak was concerned. No one dared assume it until Russian-born Alla Nazimova, who is generally credited with bringing Stanislaski technique to the Unusual York stage, decided to film it in 1923.

It proved a concern. SALOME is not, perhaps, a “spacious” film in the conventional sense–and given the technical limitations and social restrictions of the era it never could have been–but it is not for want of trying, and it is worth noting that its designs and style have cast a very long shadow; indeed, when Ken Russell site out to film SALOME as a “play within a play” for the film THE LAST DANCE OF SALOME, he borrowed ideas quite liberally from Nazimova’s unique. The production is based on Aubrey Beardsley’s imperfect drawings of Oscar Wilde’s even more imperfect play. In this respect the film is a complete success with credit for the make going to Natacha Rambova (Valentino’s wife who was originally born Winifred Shaughnessy Hudnut) who worked closely with Nazimova to perform what is probably the most stylized film ever made. It is this ultra stylization which makes the film so utterly bizarre even to today’s audiences.

The film was a celebrated flop in its day so special thanks go to Image Entertainment and all who worked on this restoration to fabricate the film available once again as very few people have ever seen it. It has some signs of minor decomposition but these are hardly noticeable and with 2 scores to decide from you accumulate to remove the one that works best for you.

The second fragment of the double bill is the experimental short film LOT IN SODOM which was made in 1933. While objective as artistic in its expression as SALOME’, it lacks the delirious visuals that build Nazimova’s film so memorable but it makes a nice companion portion for the DVD. In ZACK & MIRI, a spacious deal of sex is had and shown. It is a far more visually explicit movie than Apatow’s (the beefy frontal male nudity in Lope HARD being a well-known exception) . I wouldn’t want to compare the level of explicit imagery in the dialogue side by side with a SUPERBAD, but I suspect that ZACK & MIRI is also verbally fair a smidge more explicit as well.

Zack (Rogan) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) have been friends since first grade, and now, on the eve of their 10th High School Reunion, they are roommates sharing a rundown rental and one very urge down car. They both have dead-end jobs and apparently no ambition. They also have not paid bills in quite awhile. While neither seems exactly Pleased with life, both are allege in the diminutive routines they have to glean through the day.

I won’t dwell on the specifics anymore, but you can imagine how things might build. The two hapless friends have no money and no video camera, so they have to turn to friends to underwrite their crazy venture, and an unlikely troupe of filmmakers develops. There are obligatory scenes of auditions and the struggle to reach up with the upright title for the film. (If this weren’t a “family” state, I’d allotment a few…the one spellbinding a twist on LAWRENCE OF ARABIA honest about made me spew soda through my nose)

It’s all quite, quite raunchy. While not literally as explicit as a steady porn film, not all that powerful is held attend. I can determined witness why Smith had to fight to avoid an NC-17 rating. Here, it is frankly a bit startling to peer her correct in this raunchy mix, her mouth as dirty as anyone else. Smith has empowered her, that’s for clear (don’t know if that’s a excellent thing for “society” or not) . She also finds some suitable depths in Miri, particularly as the film winds down, that elevate her performance to a special level. It’s not Oscar winning stuff, exactly, but it will create people sit up and choose perceive of her. This, and her praised performance in W., have made it quite a generous year for her.

The movie is hilarious. That’s what you want to know, isn’t it? My wife and I both laughed uproariously many time. It will offend you, too. Smith loses control a few times, with some random scenes that grind the chronicle to a stop. Most revolved around the character played by Jason Mewes (better known as “Jay” in a myrid of Smith’s earlier films) a young man who makes it into the film due to some “special talent.” He’s humorous, but his stuff seems out of state…as though Smith stopped his movie to let his conventional buddy riff on some dirty stuff. There’s also some stuff about a constipated actress that devolves into the nastiest couple of seconds you’ve ever seen, that even so are fantastic, unlikely, unfunny AND distract from a key moment for the legend.

(By the device, I apologize if I’ve offended anyone with the review…tough to talk noteworthy about this film without stretching the boundaries a exiguous. If you bag my review offensive…please skip the film.)

Overall, Smith has made a silly and sometimes tender film. If Judd Apatow had never existed, this film would be groundbreaking. Now it is a familiar formula, with the raunchy dial turned to 11. But, if that’s something you’ve enjoyed before, you’ll pick up many huge laughs from ZACK & MIRI!

I won’t beat around the bush: “Zack and Miri” is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a laugh riot from beginning to waste, and even after the credits role (hint hint) .

There is no disguise or misdirection; it’s exactly what is expected. It’s foul-mouthed concoction of obscenities, smut, juvenile humor, tons of pop-culture references, and a helpful deal of shiny dialogue. It’s parody at the pinnacle of the genre, making fun of the 70’s and 80’s porn industry, when it was in a developmental and transitional phase before today’s high-end adult films - or so I’ve heard anyway. Accomplish no mistake; however, there is also a very serious arrive taken (which gets a bit sappy), and accurate devotion and respect is paid to not only porn (which is unique), but also the hilariously crass Smith (Apatow-esque) comedy (which is expected) . Smith nails it.

There are countless highlights and laughs throughout. The best scenes, however, are those leading up to filming of the cheesy porn. Selecting the name for the movie, coming up with “Star Whores” (and hilarious names for the rest of the series), while ripping through raunchy variations of several other movies, almost made me convulse from laughter. Some may have a jam believing Seth Rogen as a porn star, thinking the conception as right as the silicone on a typical adult position, but Ron Jeremy comely worthy negates that argument. There is no doubt, however, that Elizabeth Banks could easily be a megastar if she were to turn to the gloomy side. Their onset chemistry is definitely what makes the movie work.

It’s definitely not for the easily offended. I’d go so far as to say that it’s a fairly bright comedy if one can fetch around perpetual F-Bombs. It’s a witty movie about raunchy intercourse that pushes the socially inhibition and sexually awkward buttons.

The contrivance I recognize it, there are two groups of people who will survey this movie. One group knows what they are getting into; they’re going to observe a Kevin Smith flick that is determined to be extreme and hold poop humor. The other group will be people who will frown at the profanities and hide their eyes at the vulgarity. To the used I say: You’ll absolutely bust a gut watching this movie. I know I did. To the latter I say: What the heck were you expecting? Are you really so monotonous as to not know what you were about to ogle? It’s called “Zack and Miri Create a Porno” for goodness sakes! Go view a nice chick-flick or a documentary instead.

In closing, this was the best comedy of 2008, and it’s not even discontinuance. They are so devoted to conception of this movie that there is even a guy on the crew named Buster Pile! I kid you not. Hilarious.

This Lupin III movie is very kindly. Fair what every Lupin III special and movies has, favorable epic, safe music, qualified action-comedy scenes and etc. But even though, I don’t believe this is a ample Lupin III movie for newcomers because the animation is not the best and there are other Lupin III specials that are better than this one.

As always, the english version sucks because it’s made from funimation, so the japanese version is more fresh and the voices fits the characters. The menu is OK, no huge deal.

I loved every dinky of it. Zenigata gets the spotlight that he deserves in this one. Tokyo Crisis has in my plan the best “guest” character of all the specials. For non-Zenigata fans there’s also plenty of the other characters too, and it provides all the fast-past action you almost inquire of from Lupin the 3rd. The music–smooth, slick and in-your-face. It even has introspective moments which you might not ask from Lupin the 3rd. And of course, it’s hilarious. What can I say? Rob it!

Being an avid movie and music fan, I’m always gratified to acquire hidden gems in either artform that can choose me by surprise. I will also say that on most occasions I usually tend to agree with the critics in their attitudes and assertions. However, this was not such a case. When I recently stumbled upon this movie, I had never heard of it; the cast immediately intrigued me, especially Ingrid Bergman (in a 60’s comedy?!) I did a minute research and was dissappointed to explore that most of the reviews of this film were either lukewarm or negative, with most of the complaints being made about the “miscasting of Ingrid Bergman”. Gripping enough, Goldie Hawn managed to find an Academy Award for her role…(was 1969 that dreadful a year for actresses? ) .

Anyway, I wasn’t expecting worthy when I finally watched it, especially after reading Leonard Maltin’s review. However, I speedily found myself thouroughly enjoying the scenarios unfolding. Lighthearted, yes…but very fun. It is very considerable in line with the Neil Simon plays/film of the era, having also been derived from a Broadway play. I have to say that kindly worn Leonard is noxious on this one, as are many other critcs. The most fabulous error is the claim that Ingrid Bergman was miscast and has no comedic timing. She was a riot to glimpse in a role like this; I’ll say the best moments in the film are hers. To my eyes, Bergman appears to be having a blast with this role and it is quite apparent. At this point in her career, her mid 50’s, it is wholly exquisite to watch the composed resplendent Bergman having some lighthearted, carefree fun.

I am surprised that the Academy chose to honor Goldie Hawn for her performance. I found her to be a tad too cooky, even for a ’60’s go-go girl. Walter Matthau, however, plays the role of a sneaky dentist quite well and is fully scrumptious.

Apart from the actors’ performances, I did also bask in the leer and feel of the film. While many films from the 60’s and 70’s appear, to me, to be hopelessly dated in both of these aspects, I found that the “1969″ in this film looked grand. It was actually very curious…oranges,browns, flowers, and miniskirts, et.al.

All in all, a very satisfying, simple tiny romp. Notice folks, I’m not saying this is a masterpiece by any stretch, but I definately found this great seeing. The DVD has no extras to thunder of…fair a trailer of the film, as well as trailers for two other completely unrelated film (? ) However, the transfer of the film to DVD is surprisingly satisfying…colors are rich and vibrant, with minimal artifacts, film dirt/damage. Also, and thankfully, the Widescreen is anamorphic. Of course, there is the obligatory inclusion of the Standard (aka butchered) Version on the flipside of the disk, for those who haven’t made the transition to the Just contrivance that is widescreen. (ok…so maybe that was a tiny unnecessary)

So if you’ve possibly not seen or heard of this film and are keen, don’t listen to the critics on this one. Give it a try, it’s a edifying time.

This comedy is not thin. It has absolutely no sag, a friendly and actually believable storyline, likable and believable characters, large acting, and it’s very comical. This is what they mean when they say they don’t get comedies like this anymore. Written at a time when Hollywood did not presume that the audience only needed a point to of bodily fluids and lame legend lines to be glad.

The film demonstrates another point: the vast comedic actors don’t try to be droll. They objective act. I don’t know if Walter Mathau ever won an Oscar, but if he didn’t he would be, like Cary Grant, one of the greatest actors never to have done so. He was not only a mammoth comedy actor (”Cactus Flower”, “Unfamiliar Couple” and “A Recent Leaf”), but could quite convincingly play a thug (”Strangers When We Meet”) and a tough, no-nonsense cop (”The Laughing Policeman”) .

In this film, he’s bright as always. With all respect to the novel 20 million dollar a film generation, could Adam Sandler play the role of Julian Winston without simply playing, oh, Adam Sandler?

Ingrid Bergman is extraordinary. And by that, I mean incredibly sexy. You have no peril whatsoever seeing why Walter Mathau eventually picks her over a 21 year obsolete Goldie Hawn. And you fully understand why the worthy younger man nuzzles her neck while dancing with her. While watching the film, I kept reminding myself that it had been made 25 years after “Casablanca” and yet there she was, tranquil looking smashing.

So yeah, it’s “dated”. Were that more contemporary Hollywood comedies, maybe even one, were so dated.
