Warner Bros. has outdone themselves to bring one of the finest classics in their library to DVD. This transfer of MILDRED PIERCE is so perfect, so interesting, distinct & glistening, it’s almost like watching a different film. Gone are the spots and glitches.

The image is peaceful and glowing, lusciously capturing Ernest Haller’s masterful cinematography. The sound is astounding too, for a film of this vintage.

The film itself is Joan Crawford’s finest hour, and one of the best film noir ever turned out by Hollywood. It’s virtues are legendary by now, and I need not describe them here. This is simply a must have for even a casual film buff. A stylish and smart drama which is a testament to the dozens of talents that brought it to the mask.

If a phenomenal transfer if an essetial classic wasn’t enough, Warners has given us a B side with a feature length documentary entitled JOAN CRAWFORD: THE ULTIMATE MOVIE STAR. This is an advantageous program that was made for the Turner Classic Movies channel a few months ago, and makes its home video debut here. With an incredible array of entertaining interviews, rare film clips, and sumptuous photographs, the reveal takes the gloves off and presents both sides of the Crawford persona. Her amazing drive for stardom and perfection, her novel status in the hollywood pantheon, as well as the pain her reptutation has suffered due to the revelations made by her daughter Christina who is one of the many interviewed to characterize stories about the actual Joan Crawford. Others who knew Crawford wisely counter the daughter’s words, with their fill perceptions, leaving the viewer the opportunity to believe for themselves what they judge of Joan Crawford. A very well-researched and involving film indeed.

It’s really a field day for the film buff to win an amazingly restored DVD of one of the greatest films of hollywood’s heyday, a obliging feature documentary, and a host of other extras, for a list brand of $20. My hat’s off to the substantial folks at Warner Bros. home video.

Do not be misled into thinking this is a “women’s relate” typical of the 1940s. Given that the myth concerns a woman who must score her believe contrivance after a bitter divorce, it may have a special appeal for women as a group–but let’s face it, Joan Crawford ain’t your average wife and mother, and while Mildred Pierce may catch our sympathies she ain’t exactly a “diminutive woman” stereotype herself.

As eminent, the position revolves around Mildred/Joan’s need to accomplish her scheme in the world–but more to the point, her need to endow her daughters, particularly eldest daughter Veda, with all the best that money can pick. (Never mind, of course, that Veda is clearly a man-hungry, social-climbing tiny serpent dripping poison from both fangs.) And if that entails kicking out the husband, playing house with a society heel, or even… impartial possibly… slay… well, then so be it. The cinematography is light-and-shadow film noir classic; the production values are first rate throughout; and Joan and company declare enough double-dealing spirit to construct “Mildred Pierce” a vastly animated creep. And if you ever wondered what made Crawford one of the expansive stars of her era… Mildred Pierce will indicate ya and how!

Good Budget Underwater Snapper
I bought this camera a few weeks ago, and I’ll have to admit, I didn’t expect much. Boy was I surprised!

Pros:
-Great Pictures for the cost, and very compact. I actually “lost” it a couple times down on the first couple dives with it because it was so small compared to my old Olympus camera. I found myself tracking it with the lanyard.
-The camera has a small amount of buoyancy, but not enough to throw your control off (it’s nice to know that if it comes loose, it’ll bob around at the surface until I find it)
-The pictures it took on good visibility dives were outstanding and after a little photoshoping, I got some real WOW reactions from other divers.
-The camera has lots of options and bells and whistles. There are also a few accessories available for this that make a more complete package.
-1 set of standard AA Batteries lasted 3 dives, and over 170 photos for me, and that was with the LCD at default brightness and lots of button pressing. I even had plenty of juice left to review photos on the way home. I put a set of Lithium batteries in it and after over 100 shots, it still shows full batteries.

Cons: It’s not a $1K DSLR with a $2K underwater housing Actually, I would have been happier if I didn’t have to buy the flash diffuser and/or red filter seperately. These two omissions lose the camera a star in my review.

Other Thoughts: The LCD isn’t the best out there, so don’t delete photos because they look bad on it, wait until you get a look on a better screen. I’d rather have the good battery life over a power hungry screen anyway.

I would definitely recommend this camera for anyone wanting an underwater camera on a budget. The picture quality was surprisingly good and there are lots of options to tweak. I can’t wait to try this thing with the Wide Angle Lens and a strobe!

Great underwater camera for that price
Its very good in taking video shoots underwater, BUT There is a lack of time between your finger click And the camera shutter in the still camera mode.

But overall its a great camera if you consider the price. 250$ for the camera and the housing. you barely will get the housing only for some other (sealife, olympus, … etc) camera with this price.

you can get some very nice underwater photos with this camera
I bought this camera for my wife who is a scuba diver. I only snorkel and I take underwater photos with a Nikon digital SLR and a Opteka underwater camera housing. We just took a Caribbean cruise where we tested the Intova by comparing its pictures with my Nikon during two snorkel trips. My wife likes the new Intova over her old ones. It is easier to remove the camera and there is a vibration reduction setting which is clearly desirable when you are floating in water. The higher ISO also means the photos are less grainy under less than optimal lighting. Overall the quality of her picture was a notch below my Nikon but still quite impressive. Her success rate (ie getting a nice photo) is higher than my Nikon since I cannot easily aim and shoot through my view finder. I compensate for this shortcoming by shooting several times more photos than her and then select the good ones. She did not have a chance to test the video quality. She will try that after she is more experienced in using the video mode.

Excellent add on
For the past year I have used mine on a regular basis with my Sigma 150 macro lens. This creates a 210 F4 macro that is amazing. It is not possible to tell, by looking at the pictures, which were taken with or without this TC. Buying this gives you a second lens of equal quality for a little bit of money.

Works Well - Not much of a hit on image quality
I have used this with a Sigma 150-500mm lens. Since the Sigma lens is relatively slow I lose autofocus — but shots I haven’t had this long but shots that I have taken of squirrels and birds in the back yard remain sharp. This is a good purchase for those with compatible Sigma lenses looking for more reach.

Further Insight
This is one of the best bargains that i’ve seen, “essentially” you get 3 filters for the price of one. The image quality with these filters is great, the 812 (warming) filter is by far a favorite giving back the color richness that flash photography so often washes out, that is unless you have the patience for constantly tweaking your flash power. Aside from the 812 the UV protector is basically a clear protective filter. While it obviously has advantages over clear glass, I tend not to think of it as any different. This too is a great filter which I use about half the time because it doesn’t affect color hues or change f stop values too greatly while it takes the worry out of carrying the camera around ready for any candid shots that may occur. Finally included is the circular polarizer. This filter adjusts the amount of uv light entering the camera by spinning the filter to the direction the uv rays are entering (or turning the thingy till things look better). This lens is great for sunny days and will take surface glare off lakes and glass making them transparent again. It also makes colors more crisp in general when photographing buildings and other large “reflective” man-made things. So things sound great so far, but now to why I only give this item 4 stars. While Tiffen is known to be one of the best at photo and video filters, they have quality control issues that do no live up to thier reputation. In my case the 812 filter arrived with a discoloration in the glass. While it was didn’t hurt image quality, with the flaw being towards the edge of the filter, I none the less didn’t want to find a situation in which the flaw would diminish quality. Seeing as it was not amazon’s fault my first e-mail went to Tiffen for a replacement which they said they would gladly do, but only after I send them the filter and they recieve it would they ship my replacement (not an option in my circumstances). Instead Amazon’s wonderful customer service shown through again, and within 3 days they had replaced the entire set. The second set arrivided without flaw but since my other two filters were in perfect condition I traded just the 812. I havn’t had any other issues and i’m very satisfied with my filters. The only other word of warning would be to that of the circular polorizer. While I recieved 2 that were flawless occassionally I have read in reviews customers have received ones that were assembled backwards making the lens useless. A quick way to check to see if your CP is working correctly is to hold it, thread facing yourself, and look at an LCD monitor or TV and spin it until the picture dissapears(obviously working correctly). I still wouldn’t pass up this deal knowing what I do now, chances are everything will show up perfectly but none the less if you’re concerned order it before you need it and check everything over carefully. Amazon is always the best for returns and will often ship a replacement the next day with overnight shipping.

And a little further insight…
I was recently doing some black and white film photography, and decided to use my 812 warming filter as a protective lens as I was carrying 3 lenses with me. Just thought that I would mention that using this filter will produce a “White” sky in some outdoor photographs. The shots were taken with a gradient blue sky to which the entirety showed up white, even on bracketed sets, that should have shown something in one of the series. While itself was a interesting effect for some shots, it mostly just caused me frustration in the darkroom. I just wanted to add this as fair warning. I discovered this on accident, so I don’t know if it applies to all sky conditions as I didn’t do a lot B&W sky shots, I might test it using Photoshop later as I see they have the 812s effect built in. Anyways, good luck and have fun photoing.

Not Great
Bought these for my Nikon D200 about 3 months ago. Never having used Tiffen before I took a chance on a recommendation. Vignetting can be an issue for polarizing filters and the vignetting on this one is the worse I’ve seen. Build quality of all the filters is really not very good. Going to go back to Hoya’s which are much better.

Great Buy
I have found that Tiffen filters offer unlimited possibilites. With this kit you get three great filters. Most important being the Circular Polarizer. If you are shooting outdoors it is a must have. You also get the 812 warming filter which I have found to bring great depths of warmth to photographs. Filters protect lenses and Tiffen I have found to be great quality and this is a great value.

First off, THE FINAL FRONTIER is by far the most underrated of the Star Flow films, as well as one of the most underrated films ever made. Clear, it’s the most flawed of the Race adventures (mainly in the field of special effects, which really[is bad], and the trashy, anticlimactic ending) . But it also has a lot going for it: the best character interplay between Kirk/Spock/McCoy ever, more mask time for the other crew members than in the previous films, and the return of Jerry Goldsmith (without a doubt the greatest Star Waddle composer ever) .

But it is actually because of all of STAR Go V’s flaws that I have longed for this DVD above all the rest of Paramount’s line of Special Collector’s Edition Star Drag DVDs. I’m eagerly awaiting learning all about the film’s timorous production and Paramount’s butchering of the budget. It may assist to improve my (as well as countless others’) plan on the film.

But I must admit that I am extremely disappointed in Paramount’s decision not to grant William Shatner a Director’s Edition. I mean, they gave one to THE WRATH OF KHAN, for God’s sake! Though a DE is always welcome, the film was is no need of one! It was perfect as it was. Meanwhile, they relate a DE of THE FINAL FRONTIER, the most in need of modern special effects, added scenes, digitally remastering, and all other aspects of a DE. Oh well . . . . . . I capture what I can derive.

Kirk v. God, and Kirk wins? An egotistical dwelling up for a movie, but Stagger V is better than it’s reputation. The film has several definite attributes which are often overlooked:

1) A strong emphasis on character development, particularly with Spock, Kirk and McCoy. The campfire scenes are classic, and there are few moments in the film series which match the drama of McCoy confronting his “inner distress.”

2) Final Frontier was the closest in spirit to the fresh series. The state and (unfortunately) the special effects are reminiscent of such classic Rush episodes as “Who Mourns For Adonis.”

3) Sybok, the “passoinate Vulcan” and half-brother of Spock, is an piquant antagonist for the main characters.

4) Jerry Goldsmith delivered what I feel is his best Run accept for this installment.

What’s keeping this movie from being one of the best in the Bound cannon?

1) The worst special effects achieve on film since the invention of the motion control camera.

2) A somewhat anti-climactic climax. (The current script called for a colossal FX battle between Kirk and a flock of gargoyles summoned by the God Monster, but it was slash for budget.)

3) Not revealing Kirk’s “secret afflict” feels like a cheat (although his “I need my injure” speech was obedient) .

4) A couple of embarrasing moments for the Hasten supporting crew– Scotty bonks his head and knocks himself out? Uhura, who otherwise gets her best Bound movie role, as an exotic dancer? Puh-lease!

We’ll never leer it, but it would be gargantuan if Paramount would utilize a few million to make a “special edition” with improved special effects and the unique ending.

While they’re at it, could they throw in a couple thousand to remaster the film for DVD? It looks like a awful copy of the laserdisc– the “widescreen” is masked off from a 4×3 frame instead of enhanced for 16×9. The image itself is very grainy and a bit washed out.

In medieval times Mickey plays a tiny tailor who is inaccurate for a giant killer. The king appoints Mickey to end a nearby giant, with the prize being the hand of the dazzling princess Minnie. Mickey has to employ his brains to outwit the giant’s brawn.

Donald and Goofy rush out of gas while traveling through the desert, and inaugurate to peek mirages.

SUSIE, THE Small BLUE COUPE (previously made available as bonus feature on “The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad” [you have to secure the Mr.Toad Road Game to notion it] and “The Adore Bug” DVDs)

Susie, in an auto showroom, is bought by a man who takes qualified care of her but as time passes she grows older and her owner trades her in. She has a succession of downhearted owners who mistreat her, and impartial as she is about to be abandoned in a junkyard, an involved young man buys here, tinkers with her, and soon has her running again.

I bought this DVD for the “Peter and the Wolf” gripping short. It’s everythind I remembered it to be, and it’s everything that I wanted. The rest is gravy. I do remember some of the other cartoons from my childhood, especially “Pedro” and “Susie the exiguous blue Coupe”, which I read is what the chracters in the Pixar movie “Cars” were based on. I wish that Disney would either include a few more features on each DVD or release more DVD titles like these with a variety of shorts, or if not, then sever the mark a petite. Otherwise, a very worthwhile acquire.

I first saw this film as a boy in what was probably its second hurry through the theatres in the mid ’50’s. I loved it then; my now 25 year faded son loved it in the ’80’s and I like it today. It is a ’50’s era cowboy v. Indian shoot ‘em up in an recent locale, the Florida Everglades.

The residence is very straightforward–Coop is an army officer in pre Civil War Florida who has seen his Indian wife murdered and lives with his son and a sincere detachment of soldiers on his bear island. The poor guys are running guns to the “hostiles” from a fort on the other side of Lake Okeechobee. Coop and his men are sent on a mission to purchase the fort, raze it and return home. They go by boat and remove care of the fort but things go awry and they must valiant the swamps on foot with a Seminole war party hot on their heels as they try to return home.

The movie basically consists of Coop getting his assignment, taking the fort and then, for the last 75% of the film, trying to score home against vast odds. This one is solid action from virtually originate to achieve in the ’50’s honorable guys v. dreadful guys style. It is superbly done. Accepting it for what it intends to be, I relish it fair as mighty at 50+ years of age as I did as an 8 year frail.

If you are a baby boomer and loved the action films and TV shows of your youth, you will thoroughly indulge in this one. Not only does it feature Coop in the lead–his usual detached but heroic and resolute self–but the supporting actors are superior. Arthur Hunnicutt as Monk is estimable. Hunnicutt received an academy award nomination for a similar role in “The Astronomical Sky” several years later. He was a Walter Brennan type–just as suited but not as well known. He played Davy Crockett in Republic’s “The Last Sigh” and was a genuine sidekick to John Wayne and Robert Mitchum in “El Dorado” nearly 15 years later. Hard core baby boomers may remember Robert Webb, whose character is the narrator, as TV’s Saturday morning action adventurer “Captain Midnight.”

This film does an favorable job of creating and maintaining suspense from initiate to accomplish. I can not conceive of anyone who likes ’50’s action films not thoroughly enjoying it. Why anyone would gaze it as “racist” is beyond me. It’s fair the troopers against the Indians–just like any western of the era, except location in Florida against the Seminoles pre Civil War instead of in the west after. Coop’s character was married to an Indian princess and has a surviving son with her. This is racist? Please!

One point of ticket is that the fort frail by the gunrunners and taken by the troopers early in the film is the Castillo de San Marcos–constructed in the 1600’s and smooth standing in St. Augustine, Florida. You can tour it today. The celebrated Seminole chief, Osceolea, was held prisoner there but escaped.

In a previous review, dgraeter seems to have covered most of the bases and I agree wholeheartedly. I loved “Distant Drums” as a kid and it’s honest as noble today, remaining a handsome actioner state in a lush and unusual setting - Florida pre-Civil War and pre-tourist! Having lived not 30 miles from situation filming, I luxuriate in the scenery, birds, etc. even more today than as a child.

Cooper is handsome as Quincy Wyatt, unexcited yet exuding strength and purpose. The rest of the cast is admirable in a shoot that must have been trying under the best of conditions.

As far as supporting actors go, check out Sheb Wooley as Private Jessup in his first appearance with Gary Cooper. His next would be in “High Noon” as Ben Miller.

Action, adventure, state, Seminoles, ladies in injure, heroism, alligators, tropical birds, underwater photography (I read somewhere that a special underwater camera was developed unprejudiced to film the fight scene between Cooper and the Seminole chief) …if there’s anything more to ask from a movie, I’m stumped.

at first, I was skeptical bout this release. having only seen Greg when he was roasting someone. but after watching this dvd. I was relieved to contemplate that Greg Girado has a presence on stage. I’m not going to give out any jokes because that would honest be mean. but check it out. you will laugh your ass off.

He skillfully tricks you into believing he’s fair your average comedian whose performance is ridden with cliche narratives of the American cultural landscape. But you’ll soon bag you’ve been fooled. I secure the more aware a comedian, the better he is. He must occupy risks with the audience. Sometimes he must trust that his audience is not vanilla but again we’re not sick pervs either. With awareness of this, Giraldo is able to become several large comedians at once with material that is gross (Stanhope) and political (Maher, Stewart) . He also does numerous pieces that obtain fun of our exhaust of language, reminiscent of the slow Carlin. Nevertheless Giraldo is not unbiased a mish-mesh of other comedians, he masterly weaves everything in a special design. Each joke is not random, he’s telling a record that hopefully should vibrate with the younger generations.

A great general-purpose lens
I’ve owned the 24-70mm for almost a year now. This lens has been a favorite of many since it replaced its well-regarded predecessor, the 28-70mm. It shoots images that are very sharp and have excellent contrast and saturation. It’s sharp wide open and only gets better when stopping down. The USM (Ultrasonic Motor) focuses very fast, and full-time manual focusing is allowed. I’ve thought about buying a 50mm f/1.4, but the results from this lens are so good, I’m having a hard time justifying the purchase. I’ve been nothing but pleased with the pictures I get from the 24-70mm. The constant f/2.8 aperture is great for shooting indoors and produces a very nice bokeh (background blur) when shooting portraits. This lens is much heavier than comparable consumer-grade zooms, but I don’t object to the weight. I actually like the heft and feel of this lens on my 20D. The only feature I wish it had is IS (image stabilization).

The one thing preventing an unqualified recommendation is the recent release of the Canon 24-105mm f/4.0L IS. The latter lens costs about the same and has some noteworthy advantages. It is .7″ shorter, .2mm narrower and .6 lbs. lighter. It has 3rd generation IS that gives you a 3-stop shutter speed advantage when shooting handheld. I know from my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS that image stabilization is a very welcome feature when shooting handheld at slow shutter speeds. And, obviously, the 24-105mm adds an extra 35mm of focal length on the long end.

The 24-70mm bests the 24-105mm in one way: It’s a faster lens. That translates into the following advantages: At f/4.0, the 24-105mm cannot stop subject motion blur as well in low-light situations where the 24-70mm’s f/2.8 can give you a shutter speed that is twice as fast. Note that IS does not have any impact at all on subject motion blur, only on camera shake on your end. If bokeh (background blur) is important to you, the 24-70mm will have a slight advantage over the 24-105mm given its wider aperture. A wider aperture also helps a camera focus a little better in low light.

The first run of the 24-105mm had a flare problem (see Canon’s Web site for more info), and the early production models have been recalled. But the problem has now been fixed. You’ll have to consider your photography priorities when deciding which of these two excellent lenses best suits your needs. You would be well served by either.

Update 5-17-10: It’s been 4 1/2 years since I wrote this review, and I continue to use and enjoy my 24-70mm, which is now paired with a Canon 7D. Anyone considering buying this lens today, however, should know that a major Canon rumors Web site is reporting Canon is getting ready to update this lens in 2010. There are reports that the mark II is currently being field tested, and the new version is rumored to have image stabilization. No doubt, a mark II with IS would cost significantly more than the current version. FWIW, Canon updated their 70-200mm f/2.8 IS earlier this year; the mark II version of that lens brought improved optics and the latest generation of IS, but it was priced $500 (MSRP) more than its predecessor. A mark II version of the 24-70mm would be adding IS to a lens that doesn’t currently have that feature, so the increase in price could be even more than $500. Just something to consider as you plan your purchases.

Best available all-around Canon lens
Simply put, this is the best all-around lens that Canon manufactures. It produces razor-sharp images with startling color and saturation, and at f/2.8 across the zoom range is capable of shooting in all but the dimmest of lighting conditions. The “L” glass (Canon’s professional line of lenses) is simply the best out there, bar none, from any manufacturer. It’s pricey, but well worth it.

I use this lens for portrait and wedding photography, landscapes, sports, and anything else that doesn’t require extreme telephoto. In concert with my EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM lens, I find that these two lenses cover just about everything I ever want to shoot. Of the two lenses, if I could pick only one, it would be the 24-70mm, because it’s so versatile and can shoot so many situations (the 70-200mm is also a marvelous, invaluable lens, but at 70mm is limited in wide-angle situations).

I can’t recommend this lens highly enough. If you can afford the entry fee, you’ll have no hint of buyer’s remorse once you see the spectacular images this lens produces.

You will not be sorry you bought this!
In April of 2005 I bought the Canon 20D with the 18-55 kit lens, my first SLR camera. After getting used to properly taking pictures with the camera I bought the 24-70 as a lens upgrade - and what an upgrade it is. All the positive stuff you read about this lens is true … the color, the contrast, the sharpness, it’s unbelievable how well this lens performs compared to a consumer grade lens.

A lot of reviews complain that the 24-70 is too heavy, and it is heavy for a lens, but it’s not “too” heavy to carry around all day. I also regularly use my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS - that’s a lens that is maybe too heavy for regular use but it’s also A LOT bigger than the 24-70.

A note about debates you’ll find everywhere comparing the 24-70 to the new Canon 24-105 f/4 … These lenses are not built to be an either-or, they are different lenses targeted at different uses. The main complaint I found online about the 24-70 is that it lacks Image Stabilization, a complaint I eventually dismissed as irrelevant. I’ve taken thousands of photographs with this lens and not once did I miss a shot because the lens didn’t have IS. Simply put, this lens isn’t long enough to require IS.

If you’re new to SLR photography be careful when reading product reviews, especially those in discussion forums. Just like any other hobby (like computers), people who are in to photography have very strong opinions and tend to have to have the latest and greatest thing that just came out. If you’re thinking of purchasing a lens this expensive and are unsure if you should get one or the other, try renting one for a few days.

Another reviewer on this page commented on using this lens with the built-in flash on a 10D. If you’re buying an $1,100 lens you should know that Canon didn’t design it specifically so you could use it with the built-in flash. They probably assumed that if you could spend a grand plus on a lens that you could also step-up and buy a real flash. This reviewer gave the lens a 3/5 rating because his camera body didn’t have the right flash, something that has nothing to do with the lens at all.
