Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM APO RF Telephoto Zoom Lens for Sigma SLR Cameras Description:

This high zoom ratio lens is optimized for digital SLR cameras and capable of covering a wide range of focal lengths from 50mm standard to 500mm ultra telephoto. This ultra-zoom lens employs a seven-group zoom system, which provides a high zoom magnification of 10x. Triple-cam Rear Focusing System ensures high precision throughout the whole focus range. The new lens coating reduces flare and ghost, which is a common problem of digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance. This lens uses four pieces of SLD (the special low dispersion) glass for excellent correction of color aberration. A zoom lock switch eliminates “zoom creep” during transportation, a convenient addition when traveling. The HSM Hyper Sonic Motor models provide quiet high-speed AF function, as well as full-time manual focus capability., The rear focus mechanism produces a non-rotating front lens elementwhich accepts a bayonet “Petal-type Hood”, which prevents extraneous light from degrading the image quality. By adding an APO teleconverter (sold separately), you can use this lens as a 140-700 …. ..7.3-8.8 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 1.4X EX teleconverter, or as a 200-1000mm F10.4-12.6 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a 2X teleconverter. ..Teleconverters can be used in 100mm 500mm focal length range..

Customer Reviews:

Great lens for a great price5
The auto focus is super quiet and reasonably fast in most situations, although mounted on my D30 it does get confused in complex lighting. This is a BIG and HEAVY lens. I use the neck strap provided with the lens, as well as the strap on the camera at the same time. Although I’m probably overcautious, I don’t trust the weight of the lens hanging from the camera without extra support. Mounted on a monopod, it is well balanced although following birds in flight presents a challenge. Optically, it’s truly beautiful through all f stops. It looks like it will take any abuse I can reasonably give it, being solidly constructed and manufactured to very precise tolerances. I wanted a quality super telephoto and I got one at a great price.

Worth it’s weight in gold!5
This has been my primary lens for all of my aviation photography and has never let me down! I have photographs that I’ve taken as slow as 1/40 at the 500mm end without the use of any tripod/monopod with fantastic results! The lens obviously comes in at 8 pounds and in my opinion really helps with panning. The real reason for purshasing this lens is its incredible zoom range. At airshows I keep it in the 300-500mm end of the lens most of the time but there have been many times I had to quickly zoom to the 50mm end to frame that “perfect” shot to include an aircraft taxiing right in front of me along with the other aircraft still in the air. I also shoot at a local airport for my clients and not having to quickly change lenses/bodies continually makes this lens well worth its weight in gold!

the only issue I’ve had with this lens is when I’m shooting in windy conditions. That long lens acts like a sail and can really be a problem when shooting a slow/stationary object.
Nearly every photograph on my website, fight2flyphoto.com, was taken with this incredible lens.

Bigma: Not a lens, a window (.. yes .. it can be a pain)5
Other owners of this lens will walk up to you when you are shooting in public with this lens, and they will ask how you like “bigma.” Bigma is the nickname of this lens.

I’ve used this lens for 4 years, it has enabled me to discover much. For example, girls and women, can *feel* you looking at them. With this lens, you can get far enough away (30+ feet) that females can’t feel you looking at them. And, then you get great head and shoulder candid shots. And then, their mothers call you up and say “I just love that picture because she didn’t know you were there.” Another constituency you will have improved access to, is small children. They also, like to have their pictures taken, and with all the digital cameras around today, they are masters of over posing. With bigma your church will ask you to become the unofficial photographer because you get “better” pictures of the kids (i.e., candids without posing) than anyone else.

I’ve used the lens on a D70 taking kid-event pictures, high school soccer pictures, and high school marching band pictures. Yes, I had and hated the auto focus problems - particularly in sports. So, if you have a D70, be prepared to be patient until you get the hang of the lens. Bigma will force you to read your manual and to experiment with autofocus and to measure the % of out of focus pictures you get, and keep trying new things. But after the pain, this is a good thing. It is called learning.

Now I’m using the 50-500 on my D300 there are smaller and less frequent autofocus problems. The sensors in the D70 were not quite good enough, I think. So, if you have a D70 and don’t like this lens, you might want to trade the 50-500 for a D300. Or borrow a friend’s D200 or D300 and see if the lens performs better. Root cause may be the camera, not the lens.

Bigma Advice:

- You will need a [monopod[ASIN:B0002YE6EU Canon Monopod 100 for SLR Cameras & Lenses]] to avoid killing your back. If you get the Canon like I have, the swivel top has loosened to the point where super glue reengineering is required.

- You also need to know to turn the aperature all the way down when you put the lens on the camera, or Nikons won’t shoot. You will know that this has happened by listening to your self say “What the __ll is wrong? Why won’t it shoot?”

- Get a [Nikon lens cleaning pen[ASIN:B00006JN3G Nikon Lens Pen Cleaning System]]. With all the glass in a bigma, there are spots, dots, and nits galore to police off the inner and outer lens surfaces. Keep the glass clean and the pictures are visibly sharper.

- Don’t ever use the tripod mount on the camera with bigma attached. I did this once by accident. Always, always, always use the tripod mount on the bigma handle. That’s what I say to prevent a recurrence.

I must agree with the encomium shared by other positive reviewers. I wouldn’t be without bigma. It puts the camera into a world you won’t see without it. You bought the Nikon because your eyes are bad, you love the egoboo of giving an undeserving parent a great picture of their kid, and your pocket is no longer so empty. Buy the bigma to get the most out of your Nikon. Bigma + Nikon = increased egoboo.

Don’t overlook this Sony!5
Okay, so I’m about to be a dad due April 12th, and while I was looking for a camcorder wide enough for the delivery room, I was struggling with the Canon VIXIA HF-S21 that is due to be released on April 15th. However, let me state the highlights of the Sony HDR-CX550V which swayed my decision why I went for the Sony to suit my own preference:

Compact and Lightweight (something my wife wants over holding my Canon 5D2 and lenses)
Wide Angle 26.3mm Photo
Wide Angle 29.8 mm Video to 298mm (On the Canon it is 35mm equivalent 43.5-435mm which is longer)
12 Mega Pixels still images
10x Optical Zoom
Stabilization which works really well
Takes both SD-HC (this is great) and Sony memory sticks (I don’t use them)
Built-in 64GB Flash memory.
Excellent low light shooting
Includes GPS geotagging (which I haven’t used yet, I keep it turned off for now)
3.5″ LCD (921K)
Dolby Digital 5.1ch recording with Built-in Zoom Mic, which I haven’t really tested to say how good the results really are, but off-the-bat the results are very acceptable.

It is also very easy to set up and operate, not a lot of digging for menus to get it recording right! You simply either swing open the LCD or pull out the viewfinder (having one is plus for me) and it turns on and after a few second, you can hit the record button. Vice-versa to turn-off.

Shoots in HD and records in 1080/60i and this equates to it being 24p or 30p via software when editing, this is argued extensively on forums, but the HDR-CX550V does not let you specify, which may be a good or bad thing depending on your own preferences. Having said that don’t let the 1080/60i put you off, since this is the same with all other camcorders I have seen including professional camcorders. The 24p or 30p on the Canon HF-S21 also records at 60i.

I think ultimately making a choice on either the Sony or the Canon, you won’t be disappointed, however, to me the main highlights are that this is a very compact camcorder with excellent touch screen (this one works!) and shoots wide to long instead of normal to long, and has excellent low light results as well as support for SD-HC flash media and a wonderfully sized LCD display.

I ended up buying the BC-TRV Travel charger and the NP-FV100 battery, although is larger than the supplied battery it is still small enough that it shouldn’t bother you when you require the extra juice for extended shooting which is about 15 hours at High-quality HD mode.

Image results are great for such a small system, very satisfied.

worth careful consideration4
The HDR-CX550V is a useful improvement with a significantly wider angle lens than the previous 500/520 version from 2009. It is as if you put a 0.7x wide adaptor on the lens of the earlier version, which is a very welcome feature. The zoom is now 10x instead of 12x, but for indoor use I had little use for the long end of the zoom. (However, people shooting wildlife may want a tele-adaptor.)

If you record outdoors with the sun in or near the frame edge, and you are at full-wide or within 5% of the zoom range of full wide, you may observe a surprisingly bright, sharp “blue dot” (search YouTube for examples) which is unlike the typical and expected circular or iris-shaped lens flares I’ve seen in 12 years of serious amateur photo/video, and 4 years of professional video and photography work. Some users cannot reproduce the phenomenon. Individual users may or may not find this a concern; check the examples online to see if it bothers you. I would expect the appropriate sized lens hood to prevent the problem if the sun or light is far enough out of the frame, although a hood cannot help if the sun is in-frame.

Solid camera - excellent quality5
This camera was my 4th attempt at a camcorder in a reasonable price range. I’ve tried Canon, Panasonic, and a different Sony. Ether the software was inadequate, or there was some other issue with the quality. This camera produces great quatlity for the price, has reasonable software. Good enough to extract content for use in Premiere at any rate. The form factor is good with intuitive menu options. The only downside is that the sofware periodically throws an unhandled error and shuts down.

Beginning your movie with the legal song can fetch you off to a apt begin and “Adventures in Babysitting” gives us that golden oldie “And Then He Kissed Me” as Chris Parker prepares for her great date with her boyfriend. Unfortunately, this clown promptly proceeds to dump our heroine, which only proves he is a fool because Chris is played by Elisabeth Shue. Those of us who remember “Call to Glory” already knew that Shue was a babe and so does Brad Anderson (Keith Coogan), the kid who is too mature for the babysitter on whom he has a mondo crush. Into the mix we add Sara Anderson (Maia Brewton), the adorable kid sister who has a thing for the Much Thor from Marvel Comics (she must have got the wintry Thor helmet from Stan Lee, Jack Kirby or somebody in the ol’ Bullpen), Daryl Coopersmith (Anthony Rapp), Brad’s best friend who has yet to learn when to shut up, and Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller), Chris’ best friend who is stuck in downtown Chicago at a bus depot without her glasses, having decided that running away from home was a abominable view. Unfortunately for our heroine, deciding to simply go down and steal up Brenda proves to be a dreadful belief. With the three kids in tow, Chris takes off for the huge city. When the area wagon gets a flat tire that is only the first in a massive chain of misfortunes that befall our dauntless lass. There will be a tow truck man with a claw, street thugs with knives on the El, gangster in a crop shop, a college frat party, a stop encounter with the parental units at a party high at top a skyscraper, and a savory session of singing “The Babysitter Blues.”

In its believe plan, “Adventures in Baby Sitting is in the mold of the Indiana Jones films, where the cast of characters are stuck on a roller coaster of engaging encounters. Our harried heroine puts up with all of this in order to put her friend and regain the kids home before their parents catch out they have spent the night narrowly escaping death instead of being satisfactory at home watching the tube. Even though there is a running gag that Chris looks exactly like the Playmate of the Month, this is a movie aimed for kids in the age range of her charges. There is enough of a cartoonish element to the unpleasant guys to seize the edge off of the dangers interested and of course we know from the first label of the movie that everything will turn out okay in the demolish and Chris is going to top off the evening by getting kissed by someone who might actually deserve her. Shue’s natural performance holds the film together and although she has gone on to decidedly more dramatic roles in her more fresh films, she evinces a natural flair for comedy in this one. However, be warned: once your kidlets have seen this 1987 Disney film they are going to be grossly disappointed in whoever you pay to leer them the next time you go out for a night of fun. Final note: Be determined to glimpse the entire credits at the kill.

Another classic 80’s comedy, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (aka “A Night on the Town”) comes to DVD to delight customary fans and fresh.

When highschool senior Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) decides to utilize Saturday night babysitting the Anderson kids Sara (Maia Brewton) and Brad (Keith Coogan) as well as Brad’s best friend Daryl (Anthony Rapp), no one, not least Chris, will be prepared for the wild trail ahead, when Chris’ best friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) phones and begs to be rescued from the Chicago bus depot after an aborted attempt to accelerate away. Chris bundles the kids in the car and heads for downtown Chicago, but after getting stranded thanks to a flat tyre, the gang ruin up in a mess of anguish!

This is such a fun film. Elisabeth Shue glows as Chris and offers one of her funniest comedy performances. Whilst she is best-remembered by most film critics for her role in “Leaving Las Vegas”, to 80’s kids like me, she’ll forever be fondly regarded as Chris in AIB.

Anthony Rapp, Keith Coogan and Maia Brewton are hilarious in their roles, and Penelope Ann Miller is a sob in the film’s clever subplot of Brenda’s adventures in the bus depot. The film also features early turns from Vincent d’Onofrio, Bradley Whitford and George Newbern.

The DVD is presented in non-anamorphic widescreen, with no extras whatsoever, but fans will honest be blissful to finally have this 80’s gem on DVD. A bargain note too.

A fine cast headed by Oscar - nominated Susan Sarandon makes this slick thriller the adaptation of a John Grisham bestseller. Stamp Sway (Brad Renfro) witnesses the suicide of a Mafia lawyer, who confesses that the mob was leisurely the kill of a U.S. senator. Mark’s brother is traumatized into a coma by the incident; gangster Barry Muldano (Anthony LaPaglia) is soon on Mark’s stagger, and in desperation, he arrives at the office of recovering alcoholic lawyer Reggie Cherish (Sarandon) . With the mob after them, and a ruthless federal attorney Roy Foltrig (Tommy Lee Jones) trying to force Brand to command what he knows, Adore battles to guarantee the safety of her client and his family. The relationship between Reggie Care For and Sign Sway is the center of the film, adding noteworthy character development to plot’s routine elements. Director Joel Schumacher helmed another Grisham adaptation, A Time To Extinguish, in 1996.

You gotta hand it to John Grisham: Nobody has the various lawyer cliches down pat as well as him - in fact, it almost seems as if he invented or at least, reinvented many of them. As in most of his thrillers, we glean a whole handful in “The Client”: the slimy mafia lawyer, the power-hungry politician-to-be, the self-aggrandizing ambulance-chaser, the grandfatherly mediate and, of course, the motherly family law practitioner who turned to honest practice after overcoming a few troubles of her contain. I reflect that leaves only the greedy corporate attorney, his cousin the execrable consider and their perpetual antagonists, the starving public interest lawyer and the inquisitive student prodigy unrepresented here; but peaceful, not a terrible collection for a single thriller, even by Grisham. (And that doesn’t even include the count of uninteresting and/or malicious cops, slick tabloid journalists and ruthless mobsters running around in this anecdote.) But never mind: “The Client” is one of John Grisham’s best-ever novels, and this movie surpasses many another big-screen adaptation of his books by several leagues. For Grisham at the top of his game is also an honorable storyteller, and in the hands of director Joel Schumacher his myth of beleaguered eleven-year-old Note Sway who gets in misfortune by becoming the reluctant last confidant of suicidal defense attorney Jerome “Romey” Clifford comes to life in spot-on and truly animated fashion.

Although not even a teenager yet, Ticket (Brad Renfro) is as tough as they near - a Memphis trailer park kid who gets most of his education on life’s really well-known aspects from TV, has already helped his mom (Mary-Louise Parker) fetch rid of the wife-beating guy he now calls his “ex-father,” and since then has been the man in the house, taking care of his eight-year-old brother Ricky whenever their mother is at work (i.e., most of the time) . So Brand doesn’t fright easily; and even if he really is worried, he’d rather fall slow than admit it. But with both the mob *and* the feds on his ride - the used out to waste him before he can fragment the dirty small secret they suspect Romey has spilled before blowing out his brains, the latter hell-bent on making him section that very secret - even Stamp has to face the fact that he is in contrivance over his head … and yes, he’s shocked, too; and not unprejudiced a minute. Worse, his brother is out frigid, in hospital being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder because watching Romey’s suicide was more than his splendid eight-year-old soul could rob, and their mother is in hospital with Ricky on the doctor’s orders because Ricky might need her when he wakes up. (Consequently she’s also out of a job, because her sweat-shop employer doesn’t engage obliging to this sort of family emergency) . Reluctantly, Note therefore concludes that he needs an attorney. And in short order, he lands on the doorstep of Regina “Reggie” Treasure (Susan Sarandon), middle-aged but only a few years out of law school, through which she save herself after her husband left her for a younger woman, not without depriving her of their children’s custody and branding her an unfit mother. But what starts as a hesitant relationship at best on Mark’s side soon turns out his one stroke of luck, because Reggie is probably the only lawyer in town not jumpy to consume on even remarkable U.S. Attorney “Reverend” Roy Foltrigg (Tommy Lee Jones) and the FBI, and ultimately willing to set aside her occupy job at risk for her client.

While condensing some of its elements, the movie’s screenplay follows Grisham’s unusual fairly closely, taking fraction of its dialogue straight from the book. Yet, “The Client” lives not only from John Grisham’s moving myth but also - and primarily - from its characters and outstanding cast, including the ever-reliable J.T. Walsh (FBI Agent McThune), William H. Macy (Ricky’s doctor), Anthony Edwards (Reggie’s assistant Clint), Ossie Davis (Contemplate Roosevelt) and Walter Olkewicz (”Romey” Clifford) . Unquestioningly most memorable, however, is the quintet at the movie’s center. Brad Renfro was selected by Schumacher for his first-ever cloak appearance as Stamp because he had a somewhat similar background as the story’s hero and thus, an intuitive belief that, along with his innate toughness, ultimately proved more convincing than the acting skills of more experienced child actors; and indeed, he so compellingly carries his portion that he deservedly garnered a 1995 Young Artists Award. Susan Sarandon earned another Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Reggie, who actually listens to her clients and makes definite even those of their desires that may seem trivial to others are taken care of; such as Dianne Sway’s wish for a walk-in closet. (Sarandon’s Academy-Award nomination was her fourth after “Atlantic City,” “Thelma & Louise” and “Lorenzo’s Oil;” but although she had to wait yet another year to finally accumulate an Oscar with “Dreary Man Walking,” “The Client” at least won her a BAFTA Award) . Tommy Lee Jones plays the bible-quoting Foltrigg with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek and thus, although occasionally repugnant, makes him a more complete and almost even likeable character; great more so than he is in Grisham’s recent. Mary-Louise Parker’s Dianne Sway truly brings to life the young besieged trailer park mom desperately trying to gather a grip on her life, and Anthony LaPaglia finally is simultaneously monstrous and unintentionally droll as the slick but not overly intellectual mob killer Barry “The Blade” Muldanno, the source of Clifford’s (and consequently everybody else’s) problems.

So, peek this for the outstanding performances of the five central characters as well as the aesthetic ensemble cast, for one of John Grisham’s most moving yarns, and for Joel Schumacher’s obedient editing and sense of set. This may not be a major milestone in movie history (except regarding Brad Renfro’s career of course), but it’s without query one of the best thrillers of the past 15 years and easily recommended on that basis alone.

Jail Bait, shot by Wood in between Glen or Glenda and Bride of the Monster, is perhaps the least-known and -loved of his 1950s features, probably because it’s more competently produced and slower paced than his more renowned films. The misleading title (referring to a handgun, not an underage girl) may lead to disappointment for the first-time viewer expecting sleazier fare. And Jail Bait unprejudiced doesn’t display the unbridled lunacy and delirious verve of Concept 9 and Glen or Glenda, although there’s plenty of Ed’s mind-numbing, circular dialogue and a handful of ludicrous place points for the seasoned Woodophile to be pleased. The cast features Hollywood veterans Lyle Talbot and Herbert Rawlinson (who died of lung cancer during production), Wood’s then-girlfriend Dolores Fuller (later composer of a number of Elvis tunes), newcomer Steve (Hercules) Reeves, perennial sleazemeister Timothy Farrell (Gun Girls, Devil’s Sleep, Girl Gang, Racket Girls), Vogue model (and Jack Paar’s sexy weathergirl) Theodora Thurman, and apparent nonactor ‘Clancy Malone’ (actually Scott McCloud, Glen or Glenda’s unit director) . It’s fun to track the conflicting acting styles (and competencies) : customary calm star Rawlinson (as Dr. Gregor) out-acts the bunch; Fuller is stiff as a board; Farrell and Thurman chew the scenery voraciously; Steve Reeves personifies the ‘dumb hunk’ (spy him attempt to accelerate lines with Talbot while putting on a coat and tie) ; and Malone honest tries to act his scheme out of a paper bag. The area is essentially the sage of a jerk (Farrell) and an idiot (Malone) who go on the lam after shooting a cop while robbing a beauty parlor (!? ) . Logical lapses abound (e.g. Malone’s father hides him from the cops, then lets him go if he promises to turn himself in later; Farrell’s moll [Thurman] is hopelessly proper even though he constantly treats her like dirt) . It all finishes with a hilarious “twist” ending exciting plastic surgery. Terrible Film fanatics will admire to cringe at the irritating piano-and-guitar catch (recycled from Mesa of Lost Women) by Hoyt Curtin (who wrote the Jetsons theme and scored all the major Hanna-Barbera cartoon series) and the embarrassing minstrel prove sequence, which in just Woodian fashion is inserted into the movie for no apparent reason whatsoever. While Jail Bait never reaches the dizzying heights/depths of Wood’s more illustrious films, there’s enough chaff to be found amongst the wheat to satisfy trash film junkies with the patience to dig a puny.

Image’s DVD, piece of their Wade Williams Collection, is as fair a presentation of the movie as you’re likely to witness. Although there is some light speckling and blemishing (mostly around reel changes), the source print exhibits overall well-behaved brightness, incompatibility, and shadow/highlight detail. The relate is very crisp, at times revealing some aesthetic grain in the source material. The Dolby 1.0 sound is sure, although the level seems a bit soft. Eleven chapter stops and a slightly washed out Jail Bait trailer (also suffering from some speckling, blemishing, and vertical scratching) are included. A minimal but very glowing package; perhaps a bit pricey for some considering the few extras, but nonetheless important viewing for serious aficionados of Ed Wood or cheap, trashy movies in general.

This movie is not good/bad; it’s impartial tedious unpleasant. “Jailbait,” as a term, which normally means an underage girl, here means a handgun possessed by a parolee! This film has none of the charm of Idea Nine or even Bride of the Monster. It’s objective dreadful. It looks like amateur home movies of a community theater rehearsal. Unless you are committed to seeing every Ed Wood travesty, this one you should probably pass up. It’s a stinker.

Brilliant!5
I got my lens yesterday! I am usually very lazy, but I was so excited about this lens, that i braved a clear windy day in Portland and shot some pictures at night. I am blown away by the performance of this lens. I was able to take night shots like I have never done before. The lens is fast, clear and the autofocus smooth and quick. The aperture ring is a joy to play with (if you have a Panasonic L1 or Leica Digilux 3) and the out of focus blur (bokeh) is remarkable. Its pricey, but its probably the best lens out there for the four thirds format! get it before its gone!

I agree this lens is brilliant - sharp, superb smooth bookeh, and great low light performance. This prime lens (i.e. it is not a zoom) forces you to be in the scene which makes for a more authentic almost immersive viewer perspective as the perspective is very close to the human eye. Similar to Leica street photography - by the way Leica Germany provided the algorithm for the lens design - this lens is based on the Leica f1.4 Summilux lens and also bears the Summilux name on the front - in a sense a Leica lens build by the Japanese to German quality standards. I have had the lens since 2007 and use it on my Leica Digilux-3 SLR (incidentally also build by Panasonic with some differences though). This great lens is my favourite lens and is almost permanently attached. The lens will work with all 4/3 standard cameras i.e. Panasonic L1, Leica D3, Olympus SLRs and for other brands one could possibly use a 4/3 adapter (not sure though). A really great lens, it will be a collector’s item one day.

My grandson and I are thrilled with the DVD Sheep on the Loose. At two yeals traditional, he loves to stare with a snack or lunch. The DVD has all the quality of the Pbs indicate, but allows for a more flexible schedule if we are busy outside or away. At night when his parents approach home after a busy day, they can discover one of the selections with him and we demolish up enjoying and laughing all over again. Sometimes Papa comes home early to notice Jakers! As a retired schoolteacher, I maintain the program and DVD are respectable in quality and insist.
