Roger Corman, according to IMDB’s trivia fragment, considered this the most provocative of his series of Poe adaptations. I’d have to disagree, as I let this one sit for a couple of months before getting round to reviewing it, and I found that I’d forgotten it almost entirely, and had to go succor and notice it again. It;s not terrible, but it doesn’t sick in the mind the arrangement some of the other Poe adaptations from this series do.

Plot: Verden Fell (Vincent Stamp) was once married to a pretty woman named Ligeia (Damien: Omen II’ Elizabeth Shepherd) . Ligeia died, however, and after an appropriate time, Fell gets engaged to Lady Rowena Trevanion, the daughter of a local landowner. There’s one minor problem: Fell is serene obsessed with Ligeia, and Rowena fair happens to be her spitting image. He comes to absorb that the spirit of Ligeia may be possessing his unique bride. Or is her spirit actually in that cat who’s been hanging around?

Corman’s potboiler style of direction combined with the acting talents of both Note and Shepherd compose this arresting and watchable; it’s not something you should avoid. But it’s empty calories, and you’ll be hungry again in an hour. ** ½

I thoroughly enjoyed this comical quasi-documentary. But then, I’d sit through 90 minutes of Orson Welles sitting in front of a white sheet talking about anything. Has there ever been a more spirited tale tell? His voice-over for the trailer of STAR TREK: THE MOTION Recount made it sound like the Second Coming of Christ!

Some of the other reviewers here sound as if they could spend some Ex-Lax. Chill out, will ya? This isn’t supposed to be a profound statement. The weak man’s honest having a shrimp fun.

Having said this, I will immediately contradict myself by noting that the scene in which Welles ruminates on the longevity of art while contemplating Chartres Cathedral touched me deeply. In the context of his tattered career, and the ever-growing stature of his masterpiece CITIZEN KANE, it suggests that Welles at last attained some measure of peace with his life and achievements.

The DVD itself looks and sounds terrific.

His last major work as a filmmaker, Orson Welles’ “F for Fraudulent” (1973) survives as a rough-edged yet though-provoking essay on the art of fraud. In this instance, we have three famous subjects: art forger extraordinaire Elmyr de Hory, Clifford Irving (the novelist who conned the world as Howard Hughes’ “authorized biographer”) and Welles himself. Editing plays a necessary role as the Mountainous Orson maintains his semi-documentary juggling act for 90 minutes. Fittingly enough, “F for Unfounded” reveals more about the creator of “Citizen Kane” than the minor curiosities he examines. Welles ends his cinematic odyssey with an affectionate wink.

I am a spacious fan of Leone’s work, especially his Westerns. The Helpful, the Terrible and the Frightful is a fabulous entry in his oeuvre (though I dismal Once Upon A Time in the West and For A Few Dollars More impartial above it) . It is corpulent of his mountainous style, it’s very consuming, and it features one of the best adversarial trios ever set aside to film in Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes.

So it is with sadness that I have to rate this Blu-Ray 3 stars (and it’s closer to 2.5) . I’ve bought this movie three times now, not counting this Blu-Ray: on VHS, the first single disc DVD, and the SE that came out a few years ago. It should be clear that I savor this movie. When the Blu-Ray was announced, I was delighted. High definition Leone? Mark me up! I pre-ordered it along with the recent T2 disc. Then I started reading early reviews that said the describe quality wasn’t up to snuff. I was disheartened, and decided to assassinate my order until I could check out the disc for myself.

I rented it from Netflix, and have unfortunately found my fears confirmed. While it certainly looks better than the SE DVD, it is not the best this movie can examine. The over-zealous Digital Noise Reduction that has been applied completely robs many scenes of the aesthetic detail we might otherwise have seen in 1080p. I save the obsolete SE DVD in my Xbox and flipped help and forth between the Blu-Ray and DVD on a single scene (Blondie stands alone against some hills in the background in the final scene) . While the Blu-Ray looked “cleaner” (that is, the digital artifacting visible on the DVD was gone), there was actually no further detail to be seen on the Blu-Ray! It was as if you took the DVD image and smeared it until the noise was gone, then bumped it up to 1080. I looked specifically at Blondie’s eyes to notice if any more detail was visible on the Blu-Ray, but there wasn’t. The bushes on the hill in the background, too, looked like sharpened up-scaled blobs rather than bushes captured on film by a camera.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Good, the Bad and the Ugly! Click Here

So, the relate quality isn’t as splendid, but how about the rest? Well, it’s mostly mountainous! The extras, carried over from the SE, are all composed intelligent, and the fresh commentaries (which I haven’t listened to yet) are very welcome and appreciated. The novel menus are also nice. But I do have one more negative point: the sound.

If you glimpse the special feature on restoring the movie, the producer notes that in order to manufacture a 5.1 audio track, he had to add sound effects. While I’m positive some luxuriate in having a 5.1 track, the sound effects (specifically the gun-shots) sound procedure off from the novel modern and integral Leone effects. They exhaust the staunch same stock gun-shot that you’ve heard on TV cop shows and it really detracts from the movie if you’ve seen the unique as many times as I have. The Blu-Ray includes many audio options, but unfortunately, an current mono track is not among them. It did have an English 2.0 mono, but it’s composed the remastered sound with the lame gun-shot effects, oddly. To hear the contrast, catch a scene (like Tuco in the bath), and switch succor and forth between the English 5.1 or 2.0 and the Italian 2.0. It’s very definite and really bugs me. So if I want to hear the unusual sound effects, I have to gape it in Italian? Near on, MGM/Fox, how hard would it have been to include the Modern 2.0 Mono track?

So, in conclusion, you have a big movie on Blu-Ray with lackluster characterize and no unusual English soundtrack, but a plethora of broad extras, all on a single disc. Worth it? Not for me, but it may be for you. I’m holding out hope that one day MGM/Fox will score a estimable transfer that isn’t overly digitally tampered with (Leone should have some GRAIN, man! Check out the Italian BR releases!), and includes the recent mono sound in English. Until then, I’m going to have to select the outmoded 1-disc DVD release ancient to luxuriate in this spacious movie.

Don’t miss Christopher Frayling’s terrific commentary which is packed with production information and incisive observations. Particularly touching is the design Frayling takes up for Leone’s decision to humanize Tuco, pointing out that this movie, far from a straight shoot-em-up, shows Leone coming of age. (This fragment of the commentary is during the astronomical scene where Tuco meets his brother.) Frayling makes a few errors that are a bit surprising… Eastwood says “clear” rather than “pshaw” in a key exchange that Frayling gets faulty, and Frayling claims that Lee Van Cleef does not have fraction of his finger missing, a point definitively refuted by scenes in FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE… but his admire for this movie comes through resoundingly. This is one of the best commentaries I’ve heard. And the transfer, despite whatever DNR was applied, looks very detailed, film-like, and radiant. Assume it from somebody who has seen the movie over a hundred times… this Blu-ray is worth getting!

One of 2004’s best films, DOWNFALL (DER UNTERGANG), recreates the last days of Adolph Hitler and his sycophants in the Führer’s bunker below the Reich Chancellery as the noose drawn by vengeful Soviet armies gets ever tighter.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Downfall! Click Here

The film actually opens in 1942 at Hitler’s East Prussia boom post as Adolph (Bruno Ganz) meets several young woman brought from Berlin to be interviewed for a job as his personal secretary. Young Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) lands the plum assignment, and it’s mostly from her perspective that the remainder of the record is told as the scene shifts to Berlin in April 1945.

DOWNFALL is based on Joachim Fest’s book, Inside Hitler’s Bunker: The Last Days of the Third Reich, and the volume BIS ZUR LETZTEN STUNDE by Traudl Junge and Melissa Müller. Indeed, the exact Junge, by then an ancient woman, provides voiceovers both at the beginning and raze of the film, and appears in person before the final credits. (The 2002 documentary, Blind Area - Hitler’s Secretary, is an extended interview with Traudl, in which she expresses “plausible deniability” for the atrocities perpetuated by her employer.)

All of the major and minor players familiar to students of the period are represented: Joseph and Magda Goebbels and their offspring, Eva Braun, Speer, Fegelein, Weidling, Mohnke, Himmler, Krebs, Burgdorf, Keitel, Jodl, Günsche, Bormann, Göring, Hewel, Ritter von Greim, Reitsch, Stumpfegger, Kempa, Manziarly, Christian, Haase, Schenck, Linge, and Blondi (Hitler’s German shepherd) . DOWNFALL seems a faithful representation of all I’ve ever read about those last days in Hitler’s hidey-hole.

DOWNFALL has been coined a “German film for Germans”, perhaps thinking that the despicability of the Nazi hierarchy will somehow be toned down for a home audience. Fair, the film’s creators expose heroism and selflessness where they can bag it: the dogged and heroic defense of Berlin’s city center by Generals Mohnke (André Hennicke) and Weidling (Michael Mendl), the exertion for the civilian population and wounded by Doctors Schenck (Christian Berkel) and Haase (Mathias Habich), and even the bravery of Speer (Heino Ferch) in disobeying Hitler’s orders to lop Germany’s infrastructure to scorched earth. But DOWNFALL also depicts Der Führer’s antipathy for the Jews and his volcanic, recriminatory outbursts against his generals and the German people for their ostensible treachery and cowardice, the self-serving conniving of Himmler (Ulrich Noethen), the actions of the assassination squads above ground seeking out perceived malingerers and deserters, the to-the-death fanaticism of defenders no more than children, and the blind and irrational loyalty of Joseph (Ulrich Matthes) and Magda (Corinna Harfouch) Goebbels to Hitler. Indeed, perhaps the hardest sequence to explore is that of Magda killing her bear children - Helga, Hilde, Helmut, Hedda, Holde - with cyanide capsules after first drugging them with a sleeping potion. She’d decided that they didn’t deserve to live in a world devoid of National Socialism. At one point, the oldest girl, Helga, sensing something is amiss with her mother’s intentions, resists taking the soporific, but is forced to submit by Magda and Dr. Stumpfegger (Thorsten Krohn) . The Goebbels children, along with Hitler’s dog Blondi, who was poisoned by his master to test the effects of the cyanide capsules provided by Himmler, are the only innocents here, and the viewer’s heart may well bleed for them.

The performance by Bruno Ganz was of Oscar caliber. He was certainly more deserving of a nomination than a couple of the actors so honored at the new Academy Awards ceremony. However, can you imagine the wailing and gnashing of teeth by the Politically Lawful had Bruno’s ADOLPH HITLER been acclaimed for the incandescent rendition it is?

For those who’d criticize DOWNFALL as humanizing Hitler and his cronies, I have a breaking news flash. Hello!?! These men and women were irascible, but peaceful Homo sapiens all. Those who’d keep these deviants beyond the pale of the species are impartial as deluded as those who’d swear that the Holocaust ever took space, and they may fair as well place their heads assist under the sand. It’s a tired adage, but, forget history and you’ll explain it.

My only complaint was that many of the characters, unless introduced to the audience by having their names verbalized in the dialogue, are left too long unidentified. There should have been visual captions at the first appearance of each. Himmler, Goebbels, and perhaps Speer, are immediately recognizable, but it took too long into the hasten time to identify such as Bormann, Günsche, Weidling, Krebs, Burgdorf, Keitel, and Jodl.

DOWNFALL is a must-see film for anybody enthusiastic in the death throes of Hitler’s Reich. It was nominated for an Academy Award as the Best Foreign Language Film of 2004. It lost out to THE SEA INSIDE, a lesser movie. The fact that the latter was itself exceptional should be an indication of how noble a production DOWNFALL is.

I saw this film in Germany in November, 2004, and picked up a copy in Berlin this March…my pre-ordered Amazon.de copy was waiting for me on my return.

This film is significant for anyone who wishes to understand “the obnoxious that men do” (and women, for example, Frau Goebbels, who killed her children because she did not want them to grow up in a world without National Socialism, Nazism) . It is a deep film, based on the historical modern of Joachim Fest, and the magnificent documentary “Blind Area” (Bis Zum Toten Winkel) revealing the thoughts of Hitler’s personal secretary, Traudl Humps (married to an SS officer on Hitler’s staff who was killed in 1943, she became Traudl Jung), shortly before her death as the millenium turned.

The acting is ample. The best current slit of German actors, as well as Bruno Ganz portraying Der Führer himself, are splendid. Most of the elements that led to the coming of the Holocaust, the Third Reich, and its downfall are cleverly intertwined in this phenomenally staged docudrama. In several viewings, I could fetch virtually nothing to criticize, down to the china outmoded in the bunker, or so-called Führerbunker, to the attitudes of the many Field Marshalls, who were in many ways as “apolitical” as General Tommy Franks, attitudes of resignation, as suicide as the last generous gesture, of “doing the factual thing.”

Such films have to be seen in context. After 60 years of banishment of the swastika (Hakenkreuz in German) in Germany, we study the swastika in its chunky “glory” throughout the film, the sparkling and exquisite uniforms originally designed by Hugo Boss (no kidding) . In context, in 2004, Germans were suddenly faced with an extremely well-made film that shows Hitler as nearly human (hiding is Parkinsonian tremor of his left hand leisurely his help as he presents the Iron Corrupt, 2nd Class, to Hitler Youth defending Berlin after the declaration of “Clausewitz”–Berlin as a war front. While other officers plead for the evacuation of women and children, Hitler responds that the German people (das Volk) do not deserve to survive, because they have lost this war. National Socialism is revealed as the death culture it was. In other contexts, there are excellend books, articles, and documentaries revealing how willing the German Volk were to turn over all concept, conscience, morality, to the Führer, who encouraged them to do so. Unfortunately, the next 60 years would display that the attitudes of National Socialism did not die with him.

I could individually commend the performances of the many players and people unhurried the scenes. I have been to Berlin, and this IS Berlin, to any approximation I have seen in photos of the time, and I have been in the last remaining Air Raid shelter (bunker) for the populace and it is no different from this soundstage, do the furniture that was probably taken from Jews years before by the party, which ended up as furnishings in the many homes of the high verbalize and Hitler.

After viewing the film, I do recommend that the viewer bewitch in “Schindler’s List” or “The Pianist” to complement it. As we are faced with worldwide conflagration against a non-uniformed enemy of Western culture and democracy, it is hard to consider of World War Two as the last of the “civilized” wars, even though it was perhaps the last of uniformed armies facing one another (the Cool War, which never went hot, excluded) .

This film does explain, through the characters of Traudl Junge and her young friend, the Hitler Youth decorated by Hitler personally, as they trudge through the Soviet line on their scheme relieve to Bavaria, that the policy of war as a solution to any international suppose is at best fragile. Perhaps that fragility is our best hope for peace.

This 20th Anniversary edition of Ultimate Jordan includes previous releases Arrive Waft With Me, Michael Jordan’s Playground, Air Time, Above and Beyond, and His Airness: and that’s unbiased Disc 1! Tons of extras are offered on this 3 double-sided DVD collection including Jordan’s greatest dunks, moves, clutch shots, and assists, a notice at MJ’s shoe promotions, slam dunk contest highlights, Jordan off the court, an interactive career timeline, and more. The large bonuses here are 5 complete games: (1) 1986 1st round, Game 2 playoffs versus the Boston Celtics during which Jordan scored 63 points, (2) 1990 game versus the Cleveland Cavaliers where Jordan topped his previous career high total with 69 points, (3) 1993 Finals Game 4 where Jordan dropped 55 on the Charles Barkley-led Phoenix Suns, (4) 1997 Finals Game 5 against the Utah Jazz during which Jordan suffered from the flu and level-headed kicked […], and (5) the 1998 Finals Game 6 versus the Jazz that was MJ’s last game as a Bull. These aren’t fair highlights, they are the games in their entirety. The dwelling is handsomely packaged with a booklet that includes motivational photos and quotes that would invent for kindly poster material. For the astoundingly rude designate, this is an awesome bargain for the MJ fan.

All the other reviews here are for the first edition which came out about 3 years ago. This is the same as that edition which was Fan-tastic and also includes a third dvd and a bonus 1988 slam dunk direct. All three dvds are double sided which makes it hard to hiss what’s on which disc unless you leer at the table of contents in the box. Other than that it is a must have for any accurate nba fan because it has 5 of Jordan’s top games included in their entirety. I mean it even has the intro and network theme song in the beginning. Remember when the NBA was on CBS in the mid 80s? Brings befriend memories of the early Bulls team battling the Pistons. The quality is profitable. They must have cleaned up some of the older games from the 1980s. The five games are the 63 pt game in Boston, 69 pt game in Cleveland, finals game against the Suns, the flu game against Utah in the 1997 finals and the final 1998 finals game. These games in itself are worth the 23.99 because they are impartial of unbelivable quality. It was like they played those games yesturday. There is no stamp of age on the telecasts like some of those re-broadcast games on Classic Sports network. So you guys can throw away all those grainy games you recorded on VHS tapes from t.v. The 1988 slam dunk contest is also in its entirety starting from the introductions of the contestants to Jordan’s post-dunk interview. I unbiased wish it had more games like “the shot pt. 1 and 2″, finals game 2 against the Lakers, and more games against the Pistons and Knicks. But maybe they are saving that for the 30th anniversary edition.

After the success of films like The Road Warrior and Race From Novel York you got a lot of rip off films from around the world, most notably Italy. Made on lower budgets with b-grade actors and sets, these films are not ‘good’ in the outmoded but rather fun and cheesy takes on the modern better films. So, if you are looking for top class Sci-Fi then these films aren’t for you. But if you are in the mood for some cheesy fun rather than high art then these films are for you.

All three films have got fine, widescreen anamorphic transfers. You also derive interviews with members of the cast as well as audio commentaries on two of the films featured. All in all, the films will never glance better and time was obviously spent to well-organized up the transfers and provide some titillating extras.

A must for anyone who has a passing interest in Italian ‘cheese’ cinema.

Here is another region from Media-Blasters featuring 3 Itlaian cult classics. Media-Blasters is really making a name for themselves with the movies they set aside out. They cater to fans of cult cinema.

First up we have 2019: After the Plunge of Fresh York directed by Sergio Martino going under the name Martin Dolman. 2019 is a itsy-bitsy bit of Angry Max, but a lot more Race From Unique York.

Cult actor Michael Sopkiw is delicate mighty playing Kurt Russell’s Snake Plissken. I have to admit I really like Michael Sopkiw, he may not be known to the mainstream public, but for those who do know him score him bewitching.

Sergio Martino at one point made some trustworthy Giallos I wonder why he started doing knock off films? 2019: After the Topple of Novel York is a fun movie no doubt. We have some dreadful F/X, which really add to the charm of the flick. Not a enormous movie, but damn fun. With Michael Spokix and George Eastman in the same movie that means fun.

1990: Bronx Warriors was directed by Enzo G. Castellari and it’s quite determined this was inspired by The Warriors. To be quite impartial I found 1990: Bronx Warriors rather insensible.

There impartial wasn’t enough action and lets face it a movie like this needs that. 1990 has it’s moments, but more than often it’s honest too uninteresting. The highlight is Heed Gregory who plays Trash. What’s the deal with the contrivance he walks? Rather silly.

Fred Williamson appears as does cult actor George Eastman.

And finally we have The Original Barbarians again directed by Enzo G. Castellari, which again stars Fred Williamson and George Eastman (is this guy colossal or what? ) .

The Unusual Barbarians is fairly decent, but it honest doesn’t work in my thought. Worth watching at least once, but besides that there is no urge to glance it again.

I appreciate 80 Italian cinema and for those reading this I pick you do as well. In that case you might like the spot or you may not. I worship these kind of flicks, but I objective didn’t really indulge in these movies except for 2019: After the Plunge of Unusual York.

Like all of Media-Blasters sets it’s cheaper to choose the location than any of the movies on their acquire.

As I stated before I esteem 80s Italian cinema, but this state fair didn’t do it for me. But it wasn’t a total extinguish due to 2019.

I resent the Amazon reviewer’s caustic remarks about the movie, Richard and Steele. This movie was a apt delight from beginning to extinguish. The dancing was dazzling and lots of it. The songs by this time were used friends. Incidentally, I’ve heard the cast recordings of the London, Bway and movie versions. A few songs were the same in all 3, others came and went, which I understanding was strange. Tommy Steele (35 years ago, can you occupy it!) was fantastic as was everyone, it was a cramped long (2 hours and 25 minutes), but it was always fun and intelligent. I loved it. Incidentally, the villains were impartial infamous enough to rep their point across, nothing to infuriate you, and their comeuppance was also objective true, not some scathing triumph. I found the whole thing a pleasure, fair as I did 35 years ago.

For the longest time I conception I was the only one in the world who could be hoping against hope for a widescreen stereo DVD of “Half A Sixpence” and belief it would never happen. I’m glad to be proven heinous on both counts.

While I had no jam with what looked like a splendid visual transfer, the stereo sound seems to be from archaic magnetic tracks that have not been restored. It all sounds a bit muted, and in one scene one of the channels has a wobbling-hissing sound underneath the dialogue and music. I fair wish they would have gone the extra step to polish the immense soundtrack. But tranquil, half a “Half A Sixpence” is better than none; this is a lavish, fun, boisterous musical.

Now if they would FINALLY release “Flower Drum Song” in widescreen and stereo…Anyone know what’s taking so long?

The series, as reported by TV Shows on DVD, goes on sale in July, before the SanDiego Funny Convention begins and if you’re a parent who is careful what your children gape, this is wholesome cartoony entertainment that even parents can score into. The series is residence to be released on July 31st and if there’s only one DVD boxed dwelling on your list for this year and you are looking for something broad to give your family, please earn this DVD spot one of your favourites … it certainly is one of mine and it also features colossal songs recorded by the fictional rock group “The Archies” who actually recorded several albums during the course of the attractive series (eight different Archies interesting series which ran from 1968-1977) .

Into the SatAm world of caped crusaders in 1968 came the carrot- topped teen from Riverdale, star of radio and comics, the inimitable Archie. The first SatAm cartoon with a laugh track, from the open Filmation’s indicate was all about music. The Archie Display opened with The Archies in a band. Each episode consisted of two ten itsy-bitsy cartoons, a dance and a song by the Archies. One of the songs, “Sugar Sugar”, from a later incarnation of the reveal (there were eight), hit no. 1 on the Billboard chart in 1969.

Anyone who understands how slight were the budgets for kids’ TV cartoons, as compared to the lavish resources for theatrical animation, will appreciate watching shows from this era to search for what might be called the art of petite animation. As with Hanna- Barbera, it means characters running by the same shops and barber poles repeatedly to minimize backgrounds. It also meant finding clever ways to reuse footage. Here, one scheme was to employ the dance visuals for the song segment. The musical production was supplied by Don Kirshner, original from TV’s live action teen hit, The Monkees. Archie comics from this era were published by Archie Music Corporation, so the musical angle is not an accident. Another clever Filmation touch is to sometimes utilize no backgrounds at all, strobing the background color in time to the music. This burgeoning sense of psychedelia in SatAm cartoons would come its height in Hanna- Barbera’s 1969 Cattanooga Cats.

This residence is excellently presented, with two single sided discs that inspect like 45 RPM records. The Archie Point To ran 17 episodes, original since a season generally has 13. Bonuses on the discs include character sheets and a Jukebox to play the song segments as videos. But what’s worth the brand of the area is the interview with Filmation producer Lou Scheimer. This hopefully signals a trend for Filmation DVD releases, as interviews were also a high point bonus on their live-action Ghost Busters place.

The packaging is an involving mix of art from various styles in Archie comics and the inspiring Filmation characters, which were simplified for the note. They serene hold the sense of the amusing book however, and the writing also echoes the amusing. Jughead’s dog, Hotdog “voices” his thoughts to the viewers, and Archie and pals talk to viewers between segments. You even score a shrimp reprint of a chronicle from the first “Everything’s Archie” humorous from 1969 in which the gang meet Norm Prescott, Lou Scheimer and Hal Sutherland of Filmation. The wait on pages cleverly include the DVD menu and a subscription blank to subscribe to Archie comics in what can only be called a total packaging deal of “Everything Archie”. One episode of the point to also has the gang meeting Mayor Prescott, a caricature of Norm Prescott. All in all, this ground breaking series made with blueprint more heart than money gives yet more evidence why since 1941, readers, listeners, and viewers can’t glean enough of Riverdale’s most noted teen.

What has THE THIN MAN wrought? Correct, other madcap mysteries had arrived to cinema before Prick & Nora Charles’s oh so memorable debut, but it was THE THIN MAN series which propelled this sub-genre into prominence. Anyway, THE Wrathful MISS MANTON came along in 1938, and was one of the better variations on the theme. It paired Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda for their first of three films, with THE Furious MISS MANTON considered by many as a sort of dress rehearsal for their later screwball classic The Lady Eve - Criterion Collection (the third film they co-starred in is YOU BELONG TO ME) .

The plot: Leisurely one night, while walking her dog, Park Avenue heiress Melsa Manton espies a corpse. The police come in ten minutes, but in the interim the corpse vanishes. Thing is, Melsa and her flighty high society gal pals had garnered a reputation around the city as sportive merry makers (all for the cause of charity, the girls utter), and now the police bear that this is only the latest antic being pulled by Melsa. A newspaper editor sends out a blistering editorial condemning Miss Manton and accusing her of a slay hoax. In the face of the police’s naked disbelief and the newspaper’s disregard, Melsa Manton takes it upon herself to unearth the corpse and solve the cancel mystery. Never mind that she’s promptly threatened with an anonymous price and a knife on her door. Oh, and she also sues the paper for libel.

Rumor has it that Henry Fonda didn’t care at all for his piece, but he turns in a professional performance anyway. This film is more a vehicle for Barbara Stanwyck, an actress who really could do it all. Except that Stanwyck is such a ferocious and quick-witted actress that even her version of the screwball dizzy dame can’t abet but exhibit smarts and a sense of solidity. Fonda, on the other hand, loses some man cred by getting beaten and tied up by eight shapely society debs. THE Excited MISS MANTON is breezy and farcical and sets a very brisk skedaddle. Things are hopping in this film. Even the mystery is staged so that it doesn’t feel like a throwaway status blueprint. And perhaps the reason Fonda so detested his newspaper editor role is because of his character’s churlish behavior with the aesthetic sex. He tells Stanwyck’s character: “You are a faulty creature, aren’t you? But in time I’ll beat it out of you.” And later on: “Go away! You bother me!” His comments tend to approach off as more mean than the police lieutenant’s terse “Shaddup!” Level-headed, it’s Henry Fonda whom Stanwyck ends up with, so go figure. But I really pick their chemistry in THE LADY EVE.

For fans of GONE WITH THE WIND, Hattie McDaniels appears as Melsa Manton’s uppity servant and she delivers several expedient one-liners. Sam Levene has his moments as the often irritated, pill-popping (for his ailing stomach), grand put-upon police lieutenant. THE Aroused MISS MANTON is also a mini-study in how to stage group shots as, for a mammoth chunk of the characterize, Miss Manton is surrounded by her bevy of belles, all of them stunners and dressed up to the nines and in the latest trends of the slack ’30s. I guess you can try to differentiate among the seven debs, but none of them really stand out. I did like one politically-minded girl’s (I forget which one) running exchange. She seems to consider that every suggested group activity is tantamount to a communist act. There’s one scene in which the girls arrive upon the killer holding a gun to Melsa’s head:

- one girl states: “If you destroy her, you’ll have to raze all of us.”

- You know who: “Oh, you’re always talking communism!”

BEST OF THE SCREW BALL COMEDY MYSTERY THRILLERS ~ A GEM~

Mad cap MILLIONAIRE MELSA MANTON (Barbara Stanwyck) finds a body in an empty mansion and calls the police~ never mind she is dressed as BOP Witness on the scheme home from a Party so they do NOT Recall HER SERIOUSLY but then the body disppears~ and SAM LEVINE as the COP in charge always fun~ ADD Peter Ames (Henry Fonda) the EDITOR of the paper who writes a Awful article on MELSA WHO IN TURNS SUES HIM FOR A MILLION DOLLARS~ so now the Editor follows Manton and her group of girlfriend who stumble on clues to a murder~ this one is comic as it is a great mystery.

The clues are comical including a body in a freezer who the girls destroy up dumping the LOBBY of Peter Ames Newspaper office since the police will not consume them seriously~ clever and moves along nicely as a romantic comedy with a nicely done cramped cancel mystery tossed in~ Barbara Stanwyck is very kindly as Inflamed cap rich girl who is a bit smarter than any one can credit. I GIVE THIS ONE A Plump 10 OUT OF 10 FOR MYSTERY, COMEDY AND Colossal CAST~ clever dialogue has us laughing at humor tossed in.~ I highly recommend this who loves a classic romanctic comedy with a mystery added. Colossal cast.
